Wandering around in a big art Museum is one of my favorites. Especially if it's out of season and the rooms are not overcrowded. I like it very much, and I can even boast and say that to some degree I am a museum veteran. Nevertheless, I must admit that it can also be a trying experience. Sometimes I let my desires carry me from room to room, and let my eyes walk me from one exhibit to the next. Sometimes I forget myself, that is, forget that I also have a body that needs some rest and taking care of, and, all of a sudden, find myself totally exhausted.

Modern museums are designed with great care and thought. Their designers invest a lot of time in thinking about the needs of exhausted visitors like me. They arrange for comfortable sofas and seats. They try to leave some empty intervals and not to crowd too many works of art into a too small space. They place cafeterias where you can refresh yourself with foods and drinks. I appreciate all of this, I truly do, but there are two points I have to make concerning the state of the exhausted visitor in our modern time.

Not all of the museums of the world have been modernized. This is a costly business.
Even in the modern museums there is still one problem which, to my humble opinion, is still not solved satisfactorily. How do you find your way around?

Let me expand a little bit on this second issue. As long as you just stroll and wander, without a definite destination that you wish to reach, the problem does not exist. Once you are becoming purposeful, and you want to move from A to B so to speak, this is a whole different matter. And don't give me these stories about straight lines from A to B. This nice theory doesn't work in reality in any of the Museums I know. I am not trying to say that all of these talented people we talked about so admiringly above haven't put thought to this matter. Of course they did. It was probably high on their list. They hand you brochures with maps, and sometimes you also find these same maps on the walls. And the maps themselves are beautiful. They have nice colors, and numbers, and letters, and sometimes letters and numbers combined together like D5 or C3. But I can't read these maps. I get confused. And when they say "you are here" and point to some point with an arrow, I get more confused and fill more gilty of not being able to find myself. My only rescue is the guards. The more human loving ones notice that I come back to them at regular intervals with the same question about directions so at some point they take pity of me and walk me from A to B. Or maybe it's not only humanistic considerations. In the Louvre, for instance, especially at closing time when B is the entrance door, they probably still remember that Italian guy. He didn't find his way to the exit on closing time, one August day in 1911, and then, somewhat later, he did leave but with "La Gioconda" under his clothes.

So be your own guards and don't get lost.
