In its striving after the sublime, the restless soul of the Israeli artist Mordechai Levanon (1901-1968) knew no peace. Levanon's work is an expression of this striving - looking at his pictures, one feels like the laying bare of the soul's tangible layers. Written on Levanon's canvasses are the struggles he has endured and his works tell of what the artist has undergone himself. Sometimes you cower with him beneath those threatening structures, built up block upon block, purple with grey, grey with brown and a brief suggestion of white and blue between - you are a nonentity, a helpless speck before the triumphant spectacle towering over you.

"אין כוח בפי לפרש את טיב הצבע של לבנון. הצבע הוא שנוגע בחלל הריק ועושה מעשה בראשית ובורא עולם ומלואו, ולא עוד אלא מתגבר עליו, על כבדו, על הגולמי ועל ההכרחי שבו, ומגשר על התהום שבין הטבע לבין החירות. זה הישג רוחני. התגלות. אינך יודע פירוש הדברים כל צרכם - הם מתגלים לך על ידי הארה שנופלת עליך כסערה משולהבת."

לתוכה, אני מביט בעינים פקוחות: הפתוס של לבנון - פתוס אמיתי, משכנע. הוא מלא
התפעלות מדבקת. צייר זה נטל על עצמו מטען כבד. הוא אינו מטפל בדברים קלים, פרחים או
מראות נוף נעימים. ארץ ישראל שבתמונותיו יש לה מובן עמוק, היסטורי. ירושלים ועצי
הזית - יש בהם אקטואליות של זמננו. משא נפש. אגדה. לא ממותקת. יש לו טונליות
מיסטית. כולנו ציירנו את סלעי ירושלים. הוא השיג משהו מיוחד. תמונותיו של לבנון: הר
בית, קבר שמעון הצדיק, עצי זית, נוף, ראש פינה ומזרח ירושלים עשויות בכוח ביטוי רב.
הן מדברות בעדן. הן בעלות תוכן, סוערות ומוכיחות. הוא מצייר מתוך איזה צו שבלב ולא
מתוך תורה שלמד. פועל בפרדסים ובעמודי החשמל - הגליל העליון וירושלים עשו אותו

For Samuel Tepler, painting must be only painting, he is not interested in narrating. When choosing a theme, he chooses it because the theme is most suitable for being translated and so become a pretext for being painted, that is, a pretext for using the language of color and form, that does attract him and which he feels to be perfect for poetical translation. Tepler is, without doubt, a poet: for him the most simple motive will be sufficient to make an image in which he can concentrate the essence of the contemplated reality, then covered and adorned derived by the ideas form and color have suggested to him as pictorial and plastic discovery. His artistic view, expressed without hesitation, includes at the same time his own emotions, his own vibrations in front of a stretch of inspiring nature.

Chaim Atar by Zusia Efron
Chaim Atar, Aptekar, (1902 - 1953) was one of the first artists in the Kibbutz Movement and is well known for his powerful portrait paintings. He was a self-taught artist who began painting in Ein Harod in around 1924-1925. Despite the difficult economic and physical conditions of that time, he succeeded in guarding his intimate creative artistic space in the collective ideological community of the Kibbutz. In 1938 he founded the Ein Harod Museum of Art - Mishkan LeOmanut which was the first rural museum in Israel.
