This illustrated book, reprinted in a limited edition by Jugend & Volk in 1968, is a precise reproduction of the original graphic work of the Austrian painter and writer Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980): Die Traumenden Knaben (The Dreaming Boys) which was first published by Wiener Werkstatte in 1908 and then reprinted by Kurt Wolff in 1917.
Die Traumenden Knaben was made by Kokoschka following a commission to produce a children's book and is considered as his first major graphic work. The reactions to the book were quite hostile due to its erotic imagery - the powerful poem of sexual longing and suggestive images of dense forests, frolicking animals, and undulating waters teeming with jumping red fish were scarcely suitable for children.

Kokoschka's awkward, gangly figures signified his move towards a more emotionally expressive style and more provocative content. The use of stylization, distorted figures and a folk-art style looks forward to Expressionism. Japanese woodcuts were also an inspiration, as can be seen in the way Kokoschka uses black outlines and flat areas of bright colors. Kokoschka dedicated the book to the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, who was a leading artist at that time and had a powerful influence on him.

אוסקר קוקושקה Oskar Kokoschka צייר וסופר אוסטרי, מהמובילים והבולטים של התנועה האקספרסיוניסטית, נודע בצעירותו כאמן מוכשר ופרוע בלשון המעטה. יתכן שחלק ממוניטין זה נבע מפרסום עבודתו הגרפית הגדולה הראשונה של קוקושקה Die Traumenden Knaben - הנערים החולמים. האלבום שפורסם לראשונה ב- 1908 היה אמור להיות ספר ילדים מאוייר ויצא לאור בהוצאת Wiener Werkstatte המכובדת אך התקבל בתגובות מעורבות וחלק מהקהל טען, וכפי הנראה בצדק, שהספר שכולל טקסט נועז וציורים צבעוניים מופלאים, אינו מתאים לילדים בשל תכניו האירוטיים והאווירה המסתורית הדחוסה שמאפיינת אותו. קוקושקה, טען ש "התכן של הספר מביע במילים ובתמונות את מצבי הרגשי באותה תקופה" וזהו בדיוק מה שאקפרסיוניזם טוב צריך לעשות.
