Avraham Naton (1906-1959) has chosen a classic subject for this painting - a woman after bath, looking at the mirror - a female nude in relatively natural and domestic yet somewhat glorified surroundings. The center of the field of vision is occupied by a beautiful woman in profile, sitting on a bed. She is combing her hair in front of the mirror on the table, totally absorbed in what she is doing and completely unaware of the presence of a viewer - her painter.

While the nude figure of the woman draws our immediate attention, one cannot fail to realize that in fact the figure is well weaved into the scene of the intimate interior in which it is placed. Avraham Naton takes great care to balance the composition: the big brown wardrobe which is inclined to the right balances the left inclination of the woman's body towards the mirror, the jar on the left balances the back of the chair on the right side and the woman's arms form an equilateral triangle which beautifully expresses the concentrated and leisurely way she is doing her hair.
The colors are soft and beautiful - green and velvety red with touches of blue and yellow. The varieties of pink and red make the woman's body real and living and the masterly drawn bed cover with all of its joyful colors imparts vividness and light which harmonizes with the surrounding green and magenta sphere.
What is the secret behind the harmony of this marvelous painting? How could the painter get into the quarters of his model without breaking her intimate privacy? The answer is almost straightforward - the beautiful woman is the painter's wife, his beloved model and a recurrent motive in many of his paintings and drawings. A trustful and loving bond is the secret.

אברהם נתון (1906-1959) היה אמן לוחם שדגל באידיאלים האמנותיים שלו, ממש כפי שהאמין ביעודו של הישוב בארץ אליה הגיע ב-1935 חדור רוח חלוצית ציונית. מי שהכיר את דמותו המוצקה, האסרטיבית - איש מעשה יעיל שאינו נרתע מעימות, ידע שאת הרוך והרכות ספג נתון בביתו הוא. נתון צייר וחזר וצייר את אשתו היפה, האהובה והאוהבת ריבה, לאורך שנים רבות - ציורים ורישומים הספוגים באהבה ובהערצה המגיעה מן האינטימיות היומיומית.

מערכות היחסים בין ה"אמן" ו"אשת-האמן" הם נושא מרתק ועוד אשוב לעניין זה מתי שהוא. אצל נתון, אשת האמן היא שותפה מלאה וקרובה לחיים, שדמותה המצוירת ודיוקנאותיה, בצד היותם אבני דרך בהתפתחותו של נתון כצייר, משקפים את הכמיהה והרגש הנובעים מלבו החם של האמן. הציור "אשה לפני הראי" שלפניכם, רישום גואש נדיר משנת 1944 שמדגים את כשרונו המופלא של נתון כצייר פיגורטיבי משובח בעל רגישות צבעית נהדרת וקפדנות קו וקומפוזיציה, צוייר רגע לפני תחילתו של "המהלך אל ההפשטה" שהשתלט בסוף שנות ה-40 על נתון ועל אמני אופקים חדשים שעימם נמנה, וכפה סדר אבסטרקטי גיאומטרי על עבודותיו המאוחרות.
