Rare Antique Victorian Windsor Chair with Caned Seat and Back

There is much controversy which surrounds the origin of the term Windsor Chair - it is probable that the name was attached to chairs made in the Windsor area at the beginning of the eighteenth century and has now become a generic name for chairs made in what is technically known as stick construction. The picturesque story says that George III discovered chairs of this type in a cottage near Windsor when sheltering from the rain, and found them so comfortable that he ordered some to be made for himself, and that thereafter they were called Windsor chairs in his honor.
It is not known when and where Windsor chairs were first made; early stools with a few sticks added to the back would have been the originators of the first simple Windsor chairs. Then, the legs evolved from simple sticks formed from solid wood, to sophisticated and fashionable spindles with stretchers and arm holders, according to the evolving fashion of the time as this remarkable chair.

המתכנן של כסא וינדסור Windsor chair היה כנראה נגר אומן ריהוט אנגלי (שמו אינו ידוע לדאבוני) שפעל בסביבות העיר וייקומב Chepping Wycombe בתחילת המאה ה- 18. הוא הבין שבמקום לייצר את רגלי הכסא האחוריות ואת משענת הגב כמקשה אחת דמויית סולם במבנה שדומה לזה של הכסא שמימין, כדאי לנעוץ את ארבעת רגלי הכיסא בחלק התחתון של לוח המושב ואילו את משענת הגב יש להרכיב באופן עצמאי ממספר מוטות אנכיים הנעוצים בחלק העליון של המושב כמו שנעשה בכסא שמשמאל - כסא וינדסור אנגלי אופייני.
ההפרדה בין הרגליים והמשענת הוסיפה חוזק ועמידות לכסא ואפשרה גם מודולריות בייצור: רק רגליים - הרי זה שרפרף stool; הוסף משענת והרי זה כסא שימושי ונוח עם מסעד גב ארגונומי. מאז זרמו הרבה מיים בתמזה ואמני העץ המיומנים של המאה ה- 19 התאימו את העקרונות ההנדסיים של כסאות וינדסור לצווי האופנה המשתנים, שיכללו את שיטות הייצור והגיעו לשיאים ברמת העיצוב.

The hand-crafted Victorian Windsor chair presented here is an example of the extraordinary design and craftsmanship qualifications of the English woodworking at the middle of the 19th century. Its sophisticated design combines the Windsor chair's traditional Fan-back style with delicate rounded handholds and arm supports, smooth H shaped conic stretcher, a beautifully carved ornamental comb with stylistic ears at the top of the back and a superb wickerwork that forms the caned seat and the caned mid splat of the chair's back. The form, design and gentle construction of this beautiful remarkable chair speak for themselves and are a testimony to the resourcefulness, ingenuity and skill of its maker - a rare collectible piece.
I knew the owner whom the chair originally belonged to, and had the pleasure of sitting in the chair myself and it was every bit as comfortable to sit in, as it was to touch, and it was the most magnificent handsome chair to step back from and look at.
