Michael Druks - Collage Drawing - "Druksland" Self Portrait

In this unique self portrait collage-drawing, Michael Druks used an early and colorful experimental print (dated 8 November, 1973, 11.30 A.M.) of his famous Druksland series as a baseline for exploring and mapping the constituents of his personality. Druks assigns coordinates to the details of his life story, thus creating a private and intimate personality map, showing the interrelations between places, people, encrypted secrets, feelings and dreams which are vibrating behind the real flesh and skin of the artist's face.
Michael Druks was 33 when he initiated his self portrait project. Using a slide, he projected a grid of stripes onto his face, and then photographed each side separately. He copied the photographed image onto transparent paper and marked the various areas in different colors in order to create a picture of his face which looks like a topographical map whose contour lines match the shaded stripes in the original photograph. The basis of the collage, is this map-like print, which is visible on left half (viewer's point of view) of the work. The right half of the work is covered with the original photograph which Druks took in order to prepare the print, patterned with the shaded stripes of the slide. The left side of the face exposes the inner personality map of the artist as it appears in the print. The hair and the forehead in the photographed side of the face are painted in dark blue, and the outlines of the age wrinkles of the face are emphasized with a dark pen, especially in the areas of the forehead, eye and mouth. Druks also treated the mouth area in the printed side of the face with pen strokes and covered the left side of the work with a turquoise colored cardboard. The numbers drawn on the right hand side of the photographed face (9,8,7,6,5) are like indices of topographical contour lines, which show, in real topographical maps, all the places which have the same altitude. Here they may represent fixed emotional levels in the artist's soul. Another association I had was the growth rings of a tree. So, as growth rings are used for estimating the age of a tree, what can we deduce about the age of the artist's inner world in 1973?
מיכאל דרוקס הוא אמן ידוע ומוערך בתולדות האמנות הישראלית של העשורים האחרונים. היסטוריונים של האמנות המקומית לבטח יקטלגו אותו בין האמנים הקונצפטואלים של שנות השבעים של המאה שעברה, ינתחו את מכלול יצירתו, ישוו אותו לבני דורו וישקלו שיקולים חשובים ונכבדים אחרים. אני זוכר את מיכאל מגיל מאוד קטן (שלי). ביקרנו פעמים מספר בביתו - דירה קטנה עם תקרה גבוהה ומרצפות חומות, בלב הישן והלא מתוחזק של תל-אביב, שנים רבות לפני שהפך להיות מקור משיכה טרנדי לחובבי החיים היפים. התגוררו שם הוא, אשתו, התינוק הקטן שלהם והעבודות שלו. האמן שחי ונושם ללא הפסק את מעשה האמנות ואת חיי היצירה איננו, עבורי, רעיון מן הספרים אלא מציאות שפגשתי באותה דירה קטנה, צפופה וקורנת. ועוד רושם שנחרט בי היטב מאז - חרדות הקיום ואי הביטחון הכלכלי שאופפים את מי שבוחר בדרך החיים הבלתי-מתפשרת הזאת. בכל השיחות שהתנהלו באותם ביקורים בבית האמן, היו שני הנושאים הללו שלובים אחד בשני לבלי הפרד: האמנות והמאבק על הפרנסה.

אינני יכול לצייר כאן תמונה שלמה וקוהרנטית של חייו, אבל בתחנה הבאה שבה פגשתי בו, אני כבר לא הייתי ילדון קטן, והוא עבר לגור באנגליה ושם מצא לו פרנסה במסחר בעתיקות. אני מדבר על בוקר אחד באחד משווקי העתיקות הפתוחים של לונדון, Camden town אם זכרוני אינו מטעה אותי. הטמפרטורות, הנוף, איכויות האור והשפה, הכל שונה כמובן בתכלית השינוי מן החיים במרכז תל-אביב. הסתובבנו בין עשרות הדוכנים והחנויות וחיפשנו בתוך השפע משהו שאינו מוגדר היטב עד שלא מוצאים אותו. במבט שטחי זה נראה שונה לגמרי, ואולי לא משהו שאמן עשוי ליחל לעצמו, אבל במחשבה יותר מעמיקה זה בדיוק אותו הקונספט. הוא התמצא היטב במה שנעשה שם, ולא היתה כל סיבה לחשוב שהוא אינו שלם עם מה שהוא עושה.
