The painter Avraham Naton (1906-1959) represents that process which after the Second World War impelled many Israeli painters to break out the pattern of Post-Impressionism, though still immersed in gloomy colors, as well as in Expressionism, in order to stand together with artists in the outside world who were searching for new style and ways in the plastic arts.
Naton was one of the foremost members of the Israeli New Horizons art group which was founded in 1948 after a difference of opinion broke between the Israeli Artists Association and the painters who organized the first Israeli show at the Venice Biennale. Avraham Naton who had been active in the Israeli Association, became one of the prominent figures of the new group. He embraced its aims, and became one of its most active adherents. In order to poster it, he encouraged its members to be prepared to suffer financial losses, and even to refrain from exhibiting at the Annual General Exhibitions of the Israeli Artist Association.

הבריות היה, אפילו כאשר היה מעבירם תחת שבט ביקורת חריפה ולגלגנית. מוכן היה לקבל
על עצמו תפקידים ציבוריים. השילוב בין זרמים מתקדמים באמנות וחלוציות היה בעיניו
טבעי ומובן מאליו.
בסור אברהם נתון לחדר עבודתו, בהתקרבו לאותו שולחן, שעליו מונחים היו בסדר מופתי
לוח הצבעים וכלי העבודה השונים, אפשר היה לראותו באור חדש: משהו דחף אותו להיות בעל
מלאכה מושלם, נקי קו, דייקן. מלגלג על חברים שהיו מגלים אי זריזות או רשלנות במתיחת
בדיהם."

Nachum
Gutman (1898-1980) is one of the first artists who drew the veil from the
life of the Israeli country. His deep love of the landscape and of the folk
inhabiting it combines in his pictures into an organic unity - the graphic
aspects which join admirably with his color qualities and the structure of his
compositions.
As a contemporary artist, Gutman does not restrict himself to copying the
optical expressions of the landscape. Instead he masters his subject, reduces it
to his personal vision, and gives it and an intimate note whose style transforms it
into a kind of spiritual variation on the actual material features of that
landscape. Everything is displayed and understandable in Gutman's work. He does
not believe that the indication of hermetic mysteries is an unbreakable law in
art - an artist can be both modern and comprehensible. That seems to be the
message of his brush in its pursuit of the clean arabesque, which does not aim at playing hide and seek with the onlooker.

Marcel Janco - מרסל ינקו
Marcel Janco (1895-1984) had joined a group of exiled poets, painters and philosophers at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, Switzerland in 1916 and was among the principal founders of the Dada Movement which had a major impact on the 20th century art. In 1922 Marcel Janco returned to Romania and made his mark as a painter, theoretician and architect. In 1941 he escaped to Israel where he was one of the founders of the New Horizons art group in 1948 and later established the artists' village Ein Hod, which now hosts the Janco Dada Museum.

לאחר שהות ארוכה בפריס ובציריך בה היה מרסל ינקו הרוח החיה במהפכת הדאדא של 1916 חזר ינקו לארץ מוצאו רומניה שם זכה למלא תפקיד נכבד בחיי האמנות בתקופה שבין שתי מלחמות העולם. ינקו ייסד כתב עת לעניני אמנות וספרות בשם קונטימפורנול Contimporanul והיה לנושא דברה של אמנות האוונגארד ברומניה. כאמן עסק ינקו באדריכלות ובציור (ינקו בדומה ללז'ה, מונדריאן ודילוני - למד ארכיטקטורה לפני היותו צייר). לרוע המזל, מרבית התמונות שצייר בתקופה זו אבדו, אולם המעט שנותר מעיד על תקופה רוגעת ובשלה באמנותו - שלווה המוצאת ביטויה בציורי טבע דומם מוקפדים ורויי הומור ועצמה - הרמוניה גאומטרית המבטאת את התבונה במנוחתה אך לא בתרדמתה. אידיליה זו באה לקיצה המר עם פרוץ מלחמת העולם השניה וינקו נמלט לארץ-ישראל.

Igael Tumarkin - יגאל תומרקין
The Israeli painter and sculptor Igael Tumarkin was born in Dresden, Germany in 1933 and was taken to Israel at the age of two. At the age of 20 he learned sculpture in Ein Hod in Rudi Lehman's studio and then moved to East Berlin where he learned stage design at the Bertolt Brecht Theater. At the early years of his artistic career, Tumarkin produced small sculptures and reliefs, dominated by a feeling for the raw material and enriched with symbolic and abstract elements. From 1962 his researches in plastic values took on a more definite form. He began to intensify his use of the symbol on an abstract background and developed bold forms. His work as a painter and sculptor influenced the younger generation of Israelis in the 1960s. Tumarkin's themes are concerned with war, peace, and injustice and were expressed in a series of monuments constructed in several locations in Israel, such as Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv, Ashdod, Kiryat Yam, and Nazareth. This rare large format art album Tumarkin by Tumarkin, edited and published by Tumarkin himself, presents the works of the artist between 1957 and 1970. It includes many detailed specifications and design considerations which shades light on the way artists think behind the scene - very interesting. This is the motto by the German poet and writer Karl Kraus, chosen by Tumarkin for opening the album:
"I cannot believe in that eternal rest
I wish to suffer, to love, to hear and to see.
Eternal unrest, only that creation may succeed !"
