Jerusalem the Holy City - Charles W Wilson

Colonel Sir Charles W. Wilson (1836-1905), the director of the British Topographical Department at the War Office and Assistant Quartermaster‑General in the Intelligence Department, has initiated in 1880 the publishing of a magnificent pictorial album - Picturesque Palestine which included accurate illustrations of holy locations and sites in Jerusalem as well as articles written by the greatest experts in the history of Jerusalem and the Land of Israel at that time.
Jerusalem the Holy City by Colonel Sir Charles W. Wilson is a modern reprint of the original 1880 edition. All the original engravings were nicely reproduced including pictures from four steel engravings, numerous reproductions of wood engravings and other illustrations and explicit text.

קשת וילסון בירושלים, עסק בשנות השבעים והשמונים של המאה ה-19 במיפוי צבאי וחפירות ארכיאולוגיות בארץ
ישראל ובמיוחד באזור העיר העתיקה בירושלים שם גם
צילם אתרים חשובים כחלק מסקר צבאי שערך באיזור ב- 1865. ב-1874 התקבל כחבר בחברה
המלכותית הבריטית ושימש כראש מחלקת הטופוגרפיה במשרד המלחמה הבריטי וכראש מחלקה בחיל
המודיעין הבריטי. לקראת סוף התקופה חזר לאזור המזרח התיכון כקונסול כללי באנטוליה ובמצריים,
שבה היה גם ראש מחלקת המודיעין. בשנים אלה יזם מפעל תרגום של כתבי עולי רגל וספרי מסעות
לארץ הקודש לאנגלית והוצאתם לאור. כחלק ממפעל זה יזם וילסון ב-1880 הוצאה לאור של אלבום
מפואר בשם "Picturesque Palestine" - "פלסטינה הציורית", ובו איורים מרהיבים של אתרים
בארץ ישראל, בעיקר כאלה הקדושים לנצרות ומאמרים פרי עטם של גדולי המחקר הארץ-ישראלי
- קלוד קונדר, הנרי בייקר טריסטראם, צ'ארלס וורן ואדוארד הנרי פאלמר.
האלבום Jerusalem the Holy City הוא הוצאה מחודשת של Picturesque Palestine שיצא בהוצאת
אריאל (ירושלים) עם הקדמה מאת ההסטוריון הישראלי זאב וילנאי. איכותם האותנטית של האיורים
מאפשרת הבנה עמוקה כיצד נראתה ירושלים בשלהי המאה ה-19 לפני תחילת המפעל הציוני.
