The list includes rare and out of print art monographs of great painters which belong to the German Expressionism art movement - a term which is usually associated with paintings, graphic work, and other forms of artistic practice in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century that challenged academic traditions. Particularly it is associated with the Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter art groups.
In general the term Expressionism refers to art that expresses intense emotion. Often the work is unimpressive aesthetically, but almost without exception has the capacity to cause the viewer to experience strong emotions with the drama and horror of the scenes depicted. Among the famous German painters of this movement we find: Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Fritz Bleyl, Heinrich Campendonk, Otto Dix, Conrad Felixmuller, George Grosz, Erich Heckel, Carl Hofer, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Kathe Kollwitz, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Elfriede Lohse-Wachtler, August Macke, Franz Marc, Ludwig Meidner, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Otto Mueller, Gabriele Munter, Rolf Nesch, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Otto Mueller by Lothar Gunther Buchheim
Otto Mueller
(1874-1930) is one of the most important
German expressionists. His favorite and
almost exclusive theme is nudes of slim exotic girls in the clear green
of nature. His painting is strongly simplified, reduced to silhouettes with a very
clear structure and in warm earthen colors.
The first years of his oeuvre were not successful. After his works were rejected
for inclusion in the
Berlin
Secession exhibition of 1908, Mueller joined Emil Nolde
and Max
Pechstein in founding the
Neue Secession group
and, along with some other members of the
Brucke art group such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, exhibited his works in an
alternative exhibition. Mueller's images of nudes in nature, caught the
attention of the Brucke artists and in 1910 he was invited to join the group and
gained his recognition.
Mueller served as a soldier in the German army for a year during World War I but unlike many
of the Brucke artists, his imagery seems not to have been affected by his
wartime experience and his post-war work differs very little from that made
before the war. In general, his art seems untouched by the horrors of war and in
the last decade of his life he committed himself to portraying Gypsies and their
way of life - the sensitive portrait of Two Sisters which is presented on the
cover of this marvelous book is a beautiful oil on canvas painting from that
period.

אוטו מולר (1874-1930) נולד בעיר המחוז הגרמנית ליבאו Liebau (כיום שייכת לפולין סמוך לגבול הצ'כי). בגיל 20, לאחר תקופת חניכות ארוכה אצל מומחה להדפסי אבן lithograph עבר לדרדזן שם למד באקדמיה לאמנות ואחר כך למינכן ומשם לברלין. תקופת הלימודים ותחילת דרכו בעולם האמנות לא היו מוצלחות במיוחד - מולר הוגדר עלידי מוריו כ"חסר כישרון" וב-1908 נדחו עבודותיו ע"י האגודה הברלינאית Berliner Secession. מולר לא נואש, חבר לאמיל נולדה, מקס פכשטיין וארנסט קירשנר ויחדיו הציגו עבודותיהם בתערוכה אלטרנטיבית של "אלה שנדחו על ידי האגודה הברלינאית". הצלחת התערוכה והחשיפה לה זכו עבודותיו, סייעו למולר לחדור לתודעת עולם האמנות התוסס של ברלין וב- 1910 הוא הוזמן להצטרף לקבוצת הגשר הידועה של האקפרסיוניזם הגרמני.

הציור בעל האופי התיאורי הישיר של האקפרסיוניסטים הגרמנים, התקרב אל דרך הציור הפרימיטבית, המגדירה בצורה פסקנית, בקוי מתאר ברורים ומודגשים את הצורות השטוחות, והווה המשך ישיר למסורת אמנות ההדפס הגרמנית - תחריט, חיתוך עץ והדפס אבן. האקפרסיוניסטים הגרמנים חיפשו אחר חופש הביטוי האמנותי והאידיאולוגי - חופש שכלל גם את השאיפה אל הטבע והטבעי, אל השוויוניות והחיים ההרמוניים. עירום בתוך נוף היה נושא קלאסי לא פחות ממצוקות אישיות וזה בדיוק היה תחום המומחיות של מולר - עירום בטבע - נשים - נערות מדהימות ביופיין האקזוטי, בדקיקות גופן ובתחושת החופש שהן מקרינות.
The author and publisher of this unique art album is Lothar-Gunther Buchheim (1918-2007) a great author and art collector best known for his autobiographical novel "Das Boot" and for his most important art collection of German Expressionist paintings and graphics which is permanently exhibited in the Buchheim Museum de Phantasie.

"הייתי נער בן 15 כשהנאצים עלו לשלטון והחרימו את האקפרסיוניסטים - האקפרסיוניסטים לא זו בלבד שגורשו מן המוזיאונים ותמונותיהם הושמדו, על הציירים נאסר להחזיק מכחול, והמשטרה ערכה סריקות פתע, כדי לוודא שהאיסור מבוצע על כל פרטיו. לאחר שהרייך השלישי עלה בלהבות, לא קיבלו האקפרסיוניסטים פיצוי - ואיני מדבר על פיצוי כספי, כי אם על החזרת התמונות למקום הראוי להן במוזיאונים. נתמזל מזלי ויצירות מופלאות אלה נמכרו בפרוטות, לא רק בימים הראשונים שלאחר המלחמה, כשלא היה מה לאכול בגרמניה, אלא גם בשנות החמישים. ואז קרה שאקווארל של אוטו דיקס הוצע למכירה ב-300 מארק ומבין כל מנהלי המוזיאונים שנקבצו במקום, לא נמצא גם אחד שהרים יד כדי לרכוש מסמך היסטורי זה. משום כך רכשתי אותו אני - בחימה שפוכה."
בוכהיים אסף את האקפרסיוניסטים הגרמנים "לפי הספר". הוא לא ניסה להפגין טעם אישי יוצא-דופן, לא ביקש לחשוף גאונים עלומי שם שאיש לא שמע על קיומם, ועשה בכך, מבלי משים, שירות חשוב לעולם האמנות.

E.L.Kirchner Graphik by Annemarie Dube-Heynig
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) is one of the most important artists
of German Expressionism and one of the founders of
Die Brucke art group along with Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Fritz Bleyl, Emile Nolde and Max Pechstein.
In 1910 Kirchner settled in Berlin and began a series of paintings based upon the streets of Berlin combining cityscapes and figures. He was drafted to the German army in 1915 but suffered a nervous breakdown and was released in 1916. After being hit by a car in Berlin, he underwent a long period of recovery, leaving Berlin and settling in Davos Switzerland. As most of the German Expressionist artists, he suffered a crisis after the Nazis included his works in the 1937 Degenerate Art Exhibition. He shot himself the following year.

ranks Kirchner as
"one of the 20th century's greatest masters" of printmaking, and says that his
mature works are distinguished by "a harsh contrast of planes and abrupt
angularity influenced by his admiration for medieval German woodcuts". The

Otto Dix - Das Graphische Werk by Florian Karsch and Hans Kinkel
Otto Dix (1891-1969) was born to a labor family in Untermhaus near Dresden. As a boy he was exposed to art and took an apprenticeship of painting landscapes. When the First World War was declared in August 1914, Dix who was at the age of twenty two, volunteered immediately - most young men at that time thought the war would be over by Christmas and worried that they would never get to the front...
Dix served in the Eastern and Western fronts, reached the rank of vice-sergeant-major, was severely wounded several times and was hospitalized near the end of the war. His experience with war and its aftermath became a dominant theme in the art he produced since then. His first anti-war portfolio - a book with a series of fifty etchings entitled Der Krieg (The War) was published in 1924 and stood anathema to the myth of the war as a glorious cause - there was mud, mutilation, death and futility... The names of his works from that period are self explanatory: War Cripples (1920), Butcher's Shop (1920), War Wounded (1922), The Trench (1923) and No More War! (1924).

In addition to presenting his attitude towards the brutality of modern war and the aftermath misery of war veterans, Otto Dix was busy in painting the women of the red light district, which he thought to be representatives of the post war deprivation that hit the marginal social layers. His women prowl for money or stare narcissistically at their own unshapely figures. In his words: "They are rotten witnesses of a system of unscrupulous exploitation."

After the Nazis came to power, Dix was stripped of his professorship in the Kunstakademie in Dresden and his paintings were displayed in the Degenerate Art Museum in Munich and later destroyed. In the Second World War, Dix was conscripted into the Volkssturm (German Home Guard). He was captured by French troops and put into a prisoner-of-war camp as the 3rd Reich collapsed. Das Graphische Werk is the first edition of a comprehensive retrospective which covers Otto Dix graphic works with text by the curator Florian Karsch and by the photographer and art historian Hans Kinkel and with more than 100 high quality illustrations.
