Aharon Giladi - Gouache Painting - Family at the Dining Table

This important gouache painting of Aharon Giladi is an excellent example of the artist's unique style which perhaps can be called the "minimalistic realism". The subject of the painting, the figures, the objects and the space seem to be very clearly defined. There are five human figures. Four of them are in one room, spread around a table. The fifth is standing at the right side of the picture, turning its left profile to the viewer. She stands outside the room but she is looking into it and following the happenings which are taking place around the table.
But, in fact, the picture is enigmatic and is open for theorizing and speculations, since the details are very sparse - a few hints in lines and colors. Is the table set for supper, and the people around it are giving hands to each other and saying a prayer before they'll start eating or have they just finished eating? Are they all members of one family? How does the fifth figure relate to the first four? If you examine them carefully you'll notice that each one of them is composed from at most three or four brush strokes, and one or two colorful touches. No more than a hint to a hint to a figure. The same applies to the room and to the table. It seems that Giladi has succeeded in discovering the answer to the basic question that brain researchers are asking themselves: What are the minimal stimuli which are needed in order that our grey cells will start making rich and coherent stories out of... basically nothing.

תמונת גואש חשובה זו של אהרון גלעדי מן התקופה ה"חומה" שלו בשנות ה-40, מייצגת את הסגנון הייחודי של גלעדי שאני מכנה בשם ה"ריאליזם המינימליסטי". למרות שהתמונה צוירה בתקופה בה היה גלעדי חבר קיבוץ, נושא התמונה, הדמויות, החפצים, והחלל שייכים לסצנה ביתית אינטימית והם לכאורה ברורים ומוחשיים. חמש דמויות, ארבע מהן בחדר אחד סביב לשולחן, והחמישית, צדודיתה השמאלית מופנית אלינו, עומדת בצד ימין של חזית התמונה כשמבטה מופנה ליתר הדמויות ולהתרחשות שסביב לשולחן.
אבל למעשה, התמונה חידתית,
ופתוחה לפרשנות ולהשערות, מפני שכל פרט בה הוא לא יותר מאשר רמז בקו או בכתם צבע.
האם השולחן ערוך לסעודה, וארבע הדמויות נותנות ידיים ומקיימות איזשהו טכס או ברכה
מקדימים או שמא הסעודה הסתיימה? האם הם בני משפחה אחת? שמחים? עצובים? ומה הקשר
בינן לבין הדמות החמישית?
אם מתבוננים בקפדנות בכל אחת מן הדמויות מוצאים שאין שם יותר משלושה או ארבע קווים
(פסים) וכתם או שניים של צבע. מעין רמז לרמז לדמות. וכמוהם גם החדר והשולחן. כמו
שאמר אויגן קולב: "בציורו של גלעדי לא תמצא את הדבר הקל, הנעים, המתקתק; כדי לאהוב
את יצירתו ולהעריכה כראוי יש להתעמק בה." דומה שגלעדי לוקח אותנו למקום שכל כך
מסקרן את חוקרי המוח של היום: אל הגירוי המינימלי הדרוש כדי לעורר את התאים האפורים
שלנו לברוא סיפור מאין.
