APOLLO - The Magazine of the Arts - Back Issues APOLLO Art Magazine - The Persimmon Tree by the great Japanese painter Hoitsu Sakai

APOLLO - The Magazine of the Arts was founded in 1925 in London and is considered a widely-respected magazine on the fine and decorative arts. The APOLLO monthly periodical, now owned by the Press Holdings company, features a mixture of exhibition reviews, art-world news, profiles of major collectors and collections, and articles by prominent scholars.

Our interesting collection of APOLLO back issues contains ALL copies between the years 1971 and 1987 - a period in the life cycle of APOLLO which is associated with the magazine's legendary editor Denys Sutton.

Sutton was appointed the editor of Apollo in 1962 by the management of the magazine' s former owners, The Financial Times, in an effort to take care of the financial state of the magazine who was known as a scholarly but foundering art-history journal. During his years as editor, Sutton rejuvenated the magazine's reputation as a serious journal for art-historical research and collecting and brought the magazine back to profitability.

As an editor and sometimes the nearly sole contributor to issues of APOLLO, Sutton found a voice for the English-speaking cultural and collecting community. Sutton's editorials are real gems and his decision to publish whole issues devoted to individual museums, art historians and collections broadened the magazine's readership and made the copies from these years an indispensible source for art researches and art collectors.

The copy presented above the March 1987 issue - the last issue of the APOLLO art magazine edited by Denys Sutton with a tribute to Sutton written by Sir Brinsley Ford. The ink and colors painting on the front cover is The Persimmon Tree by the great Japanese painter Hoitsu Sakai.

Il Cigno Periodico d'Arte - Italian Art Magazine 1972 - 1975

The Il Cigno art magazine was the leading Italian art periodical in the early 70s. This beautiful and unique art periodical was initiated by the artist Bartolomeo Gatto, a veteran of the Accademia di Brera who founded the renowned art gallery "Il Cigno" in Milano which soon became a meeting point for artists, art historians and contemporary intellectuals. The Il Cigno periodico d'arte quarterly magazine covered major exhibitions and art events which took place in Milano and in Italy and published art news and interviews with Italian and international artists which were involved in the important and vivid art scene of Milan in those days.

Our collection includes all Il Cigno issues published from October 1971 until August 1975. The primary article in the gennaio-mazo (January-March) 1975 issue,  Appontamento con Tepler (a meeting with Tepler) by the art writer Livio Cisaroli is dedicated to the paintings of the Jewish-Israeli painter Samuel Tepler. In the interview part of the article, Tepler explains why he prefers Italy over France for exhibiting his latest works and gently expresses his opinion about the young generation of Italian artists. The back cover of the magazine presents a dramatic orange-red-black painting of Tepler.
