The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp - Arturo Schwarz
Dialogues with Marcel Duchamp - Pierre Cabanne with Preface by Salvador Dali
***
Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), the principal leader and guiding spirit of the Dada movement and the Surrealism was and still is one of the most fascinating, influential, and controversial figures in the history of modern art. From his first moment of fame in 1913, when Nude Descending a Staircase No 2 became the sensation of the Armory Show in New York, he has remained a vital and liberating force. Indeed, his influence was so strong that the fact of his physical death in October 1968, was deliberately ignored by Arturo Schwarz - the author of this great art monograph, except in a small, moving epitaph printed as the last chapter of this volume.

Ready Made
-
Duchamp's work, which began by attacking the pretensions of academic art, developed into a questioning of the fundamental validity of art itself. This collectible book, which is the definitive work on Duchamp, was created and designed over a period of many years by Arturo Schwarz, the author, working in close collaboration with the artist. It sparkles with intellectual excitement - the author has taken to heart Duchamp's sage advice: "Have fun, if not you'll bore us"...
The book is divided into three main parts. The first discusses the series of
unconventional works which led Duchamp to explore many different expressive
possibilities. Among these are the
Readymades and the optical works. In this
portion there is also much fascinating biographical material. The second part is
devoted to a detailed discussion of Duchamp's masterpiece,
The Bride Stripped by Her Bachelors, Even, which is also known as the
Large Glass, and which the author establishes as the focal point of his curve.

Following the first two parts is a section devoted to source material. Duchamp's
complete works are detailed in the Critical
Catalogue Raisonne. Then come a Topographical Index of Duchamp's works and a
comprehensive Descriptive Bibliography of Marcel Duchamp's Writings, Lectures,
Translations, and Interviews. A bibliography of Works Quoted and the Index
complete this outstanding and scholarly achievement. The catalog also includes
Duchamp's most important late work - a highly complex "environment" now
reassembled at
The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Although Duchamp worked on this piece
intermittently from 1946 to 1966, its existence was made public only in 1969.
The illustrations were selected in consultation with the artist, who approved
the plates for the utmost fidelity to the original works of art.

These interviews with Marcel Duchamp took place
in his studio at Neutili (near Paris) where he and his wife lived during the six
months they spent in France each year. It was the first time that the most
disconcerting inventor in contemporary art has agreed to talk about and explain,
so profoundly and at such length his actions, his reactions, his feelings, and
the choices he has made.
The author, Pierre Cabanne writes that Duchamp gave these interviews with a "serenity from which he never departed, and which gave his theorems an undeniable grandeur; one divined a man not only detached, but preserved. He speaks in a calm, steady, level voice; his memory is prodigious, the words that he employs are not automatic or stale, as though one is replying for the nth time to an interviewer, but carefully considered. Only one question provoked in him a marked reaction: near the end, when I asked him whether he believed in God..."
