Ernst Fuchs: Die Symbolik des Traumes by Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert
The great Austrian painter and print master Ernst Fuchs dedicated 9 beautiful original etchings to the deluxe edition of Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert's study entitled Die Symbolik des Traumes - The Symbolism of the Dreams - which was published in 1968 by Die Belser Presse - the Belser publishing house in Stuttgart. The first copy of Schubert's important work was published in 1814 and caused an impressive impact on scholars and artists - it was a pioneer study which tried to investigate dreams as part of the subconscious phenomena and the relationship between dreams and reality. Schubert (1780 - 1860) differentiated between dreams which express anxiety and serve as premonitory signs and dreams which establish a direct channel of communication between the soul and God.

Ernst Fuchs, a great believer, was highly impressed by Schubert's religiously-grounded interpretation of the cosmos and the role of dreams as an evidence to the presence of God in Nature and Life. These unique celestial etchings express the master's supreme awareness of the wholeness of existence.

The text in this Belser's deluxe copy follows the original text of the first edition published in 1814 with some "improvements made by the author" as introduced in the third edition which was published in 1840. The book also includes an introduction by G.R. Heyer and has a beautiful hardcover with gold lettering of the title which resides in uniquely beautiful pink slipcase ornamented in a Jugendstil pattern.

The master Ernst Fuchs, who is also a sort of a philosopher of art in his own unique fantastic realism way, said that he believes that "Art in its deepest essence is glorification of existence, the only true form of life worthy of man" - I agree.

How do we lack such a meaning of existence and the liturgy for its recognition. For what reason, what purpose, what goal do we work?
