Built between 1861 and 1874 by Charles Garnier, the old Opera House of Paris, Le Palais Garnier, has gigantic proportions as well as a monumental harmonious majesty which contribute to its reputation as one of the most famous opera houses in the world. In 1964, the great Jewish artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was commissioned by Andre Malraux and Georges Pompidou to re-paint the rounded ceiling area which surrounds a huge 7-ton bronze and crystal chandelier in the main concert hall of Le Palais Garnier.

Chagall's painting for Paris Opera was installed on a removable frame over the original ceiling. In the new painting, Chagall depicted scenes from operas by 14 composers: Mussorgsky, Mozart, Wagner, Berlioz, Rameau, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Adam, Bizet, Verdi, Beethoven, and Gluck. Each of the scenes is absorbed with Chagall's light of joy and happiness stemming from the artist's unrivaled imagination and richness of invention. It took the 77 year old artist a year to complete the mission - the rounded painting stands out, in its bright and fragrant colors, as a magnificent spectacle.

מארק שאגאל נולד בויטבסק, רוסיה ב-1887 בן בכור למשפחה יהודית צנועה עד מאד, למד שנתיים באקדמיה הקיסרית לאמנות של פטרסבורג ואחר כך בבית הספר לאמנויות הבמה בהדרכתו של ליאון באקסט; ב-1910 נשלח לפריז ע"י נדיב מקומי חובב אמנות. בפריז קבע את משכנו ב "La Ruche" - ה"כוורת", מעין אכסניה אמנותית בסמוך לבתי המטבחיים שברחוב ווז'יראר שם התוודע לגיום אפולינר, מאקס ז'קוב, בלז סנדראר, אמדאו מודיליאני, רוברט דלוניי ומשוררים ואמנים מודרניסטים אחרים שפעלו אז בפריז. המפגש עם הקוביזם חיזק את הקו האמנותי המיוחד, העצמאי ופורץ הדרך של שאגאל ונתן הכשר לרעיונות העל-טבעיים שפיעמו בו. ב-1914 הציג בברלין, באכסניה של כתב העת "דר שטורם", ואחר כך חזר לרוסיה שם התחתן עם אהובתו בלה. עם פרוץ המהפכה מונה שאגאל לקומיסר אמנותי בויטבסק וב-1919 עבר למוסקבה שם השתלב בחוגי האוונגרד הרוסי ובנוסף תכנן תלבושות וצייר תפאורות לתיאטרון היהודי בהנהלת אלכסי גראנובסקי. ב-1922 חזר מארק שאגאל להתגורר בפריז שם צייר והכין סדרות תחריטים ל"נשמות מתות" של גוגול ול"משלי לאפונטיין" ולסיפורי התנ"ך בתמונות עבור סוחר האמנות והמו"ל הצרפתי אמברואז וולאר. שאגאל הרבה לתייר - בריטניה, הולנד, ארצות הברית, איטליה, ארץ ישראל; ב-1931 יצא למסע במזרח כדי לספוג את אוירת כתבי הקודש וב-1935 יצא למסע בפולין; בכל מקום ספג נופים ותרבויות. ב-1941, לאחר כיבוש צרפת נמלט לארצות הברית שם התפרסם בזכות הצלחת התפאורות והתלבושות שתכנן והקים להופעת הבלט אלקו של ליאוניד מאסין; ב-1944 נפטרה בפתאומיות אשתו האהובה בלה. ב-1946 צייר שאגאל את התפאורות ל"ציפור האש" של סטרווינסקי וזכה לתערוכה רטרוספקטיבית במוזיאון לאמנות מודרנית של ניו-יורק. ב-1947 חזר שאגאל לפריז וערך תערוכה רטרוספקטיבית במוזיאון לאמנות מודרנית של פריז. ב- 1948 זכה בפרס התחריט הבינלאומי של ה"בינאלה" של ונציה והשתקע בחבל פרובנס בצרפת שם חי ויצר עד מותו בשיבה טובה ב-1985.
ב-1964 הוזמן מארק שאגאל ע"י ממשלת צרפת לצייר מחדש את התקרה של האולם המרכזי של בית האופרה הממלכתי בפריז שנקרא ארמון גרנייה Le Palais Garnier על שם האדריכל שארל גרנייה שתכנן אותו. הפרוייקט היה תובעני ורחב היקף בשל גודלה העצום - 220 מ"ר - של התקרה העגולה שבמרכזה נברשת מפוארת עשויה ברונזה וזכוכית שמשקלה כ-7 טון. שאגאל היה גם צריך להביא בחשבון את הצבעים והאוירה של אולם האופרה והמושבים כפי שעוצבו ע"י גרנייה בשלהי המאה ה-19: הוד והדר בצבעי זהב, ושחור וכסאות קטיפה בצבעי אדום עמוקים.
שאגאל תכנן את ציור הכיפה העגולה באופן שיכלול סצנות מ-14 אופרות של המלחינים הקלאסיים הגדולים - מוסורגסקי, מוצארט, ואגנר, ברליוז, ראמו, דביסי, ראבל, סטראוינסקי, צ'ייקובסקי, אדם, ביזה, וורדי, בטהובן וגלוק. התוצאה היתה מדהימה. שאגאל מיזג את העלילות השונות למקהלת צבעים אינסטינקטיבית שמעטים האמנים שיודעים לנצח עליה כמותו - הוא עושה זאת בכוחם של ריצודי בהירות וכהות, של קצבי תנועה עזים ורוגעים ועל ידי הערבסקות וגושי הצבע היסודיים, האדום והצהוב , דם ושמש מרחפים. עולמו של שאגאל וחלומו מעורבים ומשולבים ללא היסוס באמנותו - אמנות הציור המוצגת באלבום המופלא שלפניכם.
Original Lithography by Marc Chagall as a Frontispiece
The wonderfully illustrated art book by Jacques Lassaigne (1911-1983), with its many colored and black & white drawings and sketches, documents the process of design and implementation of the painting of Le Plafond de L'opera de Paris par Marc Chagall. Lassaigne describes in details Chagall's considerations and the evolving steps he took towards achieving the right balance and equivalence between the colorful lightweight palette of his painting on the ceiling and the existing deep red, gold, black and white colors of the floor and the stage. The outcome is a great masterpiece which coincides in harmony with the deep red dim lights of the hall like a bouquet of flowers in bloom.

This book was brought to print by Andre Sauret on the 6th of October 1965 in the printing press of Lion in Paris. The texts by Jacques Lassaigne were manually composed in Romain Du Roi at the French National Printing Workshop in Paris. The six color lithographs and all the black and white drawings have been placed on stone by Charles Sorlier based on the original paintings and drawings of Marc Chagall. The original color lithography by Marc Chagall and the six color lithographs prepared by Sorlier were printed in the press of the Mourlot brothers. Binding was produced by Maurice Busenhart in Lausanne. The six color photographs of the ceiling were taken by Jean Dubout and the eight b&w photographs of the progress of work on the ceiling are by Izis.

This special issue of the XXe Siecle artistic review edited by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro is a beautiful retrospective of Marc Chagall oeuvre with numerous color and black and white illustrations - a comprehensive art monograph in luxurious album format with an embedded original color lithograph by Marc Chagall (Mourlot 572).

The Lithographs of CHAGALL, 1962-1968: Lithographe III - Notes and Catalogue by Fernand Mourlot and Charles Sorlier with Original Lithographs
The third volume of the complete Chagall's lithographs catalogue raisonne presents and documents all lithographs made by Marc Chagall between the years 1962-1968. This series, which includes 183 lithographs (plates 377-560 in Mourlot list), is considered to be the most beautiful, fresh and fascinating print work of the great painter, potter, sculptor, stained glass artist, and of course a brilliant engraver and lithographer.
At his eighties, Chagall was delighted to use the lithography techniques that he had longed to master in the service of the magnificent cyclic dramas that formed the inspiration of his art. He also used lithography when fancy took him to a subject from the wealth of the glorious nature surrounding him: birds or beasts or lovers entwined half hidden by gigantic bunches of flowers. Flowers and fruits were always with him, and his lyric temper made it natural for him to say, "Gardens bloom within me". These light hearted themes gave him the rest, or rather the change, needed by a man of his great age who has undertaken grandiose labors.

מארק שאגאל אימץ את אמנות ההדפס הליתוגרפי בשלב מאוחר יחסית בקריירה האומנותית העשירה שלו. בתקופה שקדמה לעזיבתו את צרפת ב-1941 כמעט ולא הפיק ליתוגרפיות ומאמציו בתחום זה הסתכמו באיורים לספרים שיצאו לאור בהוצאת אמברואז וולארד Ambroise Vollard ובמספר רישומי הכנה בעיפרון שלא ניתן לראותם כחשובים במיוחד. רק אחרי שחזר לצרפת ב-1949 והתיישב בה דרך קבע, הפך שאגאל את הליתוגרפיה למדיה עיקרית ביצירתו, הרבה בזכות קשריו הפוריים עם טריאד Teriade - מבקר האמנות והמו"ל של המגזין המשובח "ורוו" Verve.

Chagall could pass easily from monumental works such as the ceiling of the Opera House in Paris, and the twelve stained glass windows of the synagogue of the Medical Center of the Hebrew Hadassah University at Jerusalem - works on a scale to rival the great achievements of the Renaissance, to gouaches and lithographs which however small in scale were not "minor" works, for he would not have recognized any such hierarchy. At eighty two his hands remained as agile and as supple as his mind, constantly inventing, like a musician, new variations of astonishing freshness on old themes, finding thereby the truest ways to delight our eyes and wake our sensibilities.

CHAGALL Monumental - XXe Siecle San Lazzaro - Hommage a Marc Chagall Monumental Works - 1973
During the last 25 years of his life, Marc Chagall decided not to limit his work only to the drawing table or the easel but also, as many other great modern artists have done, to extend his creativity into the field of monumental art. Perhaps the term "monumental art" is somewhat misleading - this kind of art which is tied to and is part of the place for which it was created. In the case of Chagall, it was inevitable a 'sacred place' even if the religious denominations involved might vary from mosques to chapels and synagogues. When the location was not overtly sacred, then it had to be a music hall or a place in which people came together to improve their understanding of one another as in the United Nations Building or in the The Four Seasons Mosaic Square in Chicago.

The spectacular artist's monograph presented here was published by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro in 1973 - it includes Chagall's monumental tapestries and mosaics works as well as some of Chagall's most marvellous designs in stained glass which grew out of a chance meeting with the great artist and master glassmaker Charles Marq. Had the meeting not taken place, things could have been very different: perhaps Chagall would not have developed the passion for this form, one of the most difficult artistic techniques. In such a case, the magnificent stained glass work "Jerusalem Windows" representing the twelve tribes of Israel would have never been installed.
