The poem ECOLOGY was written and published by the poet Meir Wieseltier in Tel Aviv, June 1973. Wieseltier dedicated the poem to his friend and colleague, the painter and architect Nahoum Cohen who lived in London at that time. Cohen was inspired by Wieseltier's text and in November 1974 prepared a series of beautiful drawings which captured the poem's spirit. At the beginning of 1975, Wieseltier, together with Curtis Arnson and Russell Carlisle, have translated the poem from Hebrew to English. Cohen copied the Hebrew and English verses in handwriting and merged them into 8 lithographs which were based on his former drawings. The series was published in London in a limited edition on March 1975.

The roots of the fruitful cooperation between the artist and architect Nahoum
Cohen and the poet Meir Wieseltier were conceived in the 60's. Wieseltier
participated in Nahoum Cohen (AKA Nahum Kein) and
Maxim Ghilan
(Gilan) anarchistic underground literary-artistic anthology "Kiltartan"
and helped in editing the literary materials. The avant-garde booklet was published as a
one-time edition in 1964 and distributed among the bohemian spheres in
Tel-Aviv. Later in the 60's, Nahoum Cohen moved to London where he mastered his architecture and urban design
learning. The beautiful
lithographs presented here, are the outcome of the joint effort of the two
artists but most of all reflect Cohen's powerful genuine protest against the
irreversible process of the destruction of the fragile ecosystems of our planet
by mankind.

Scattered amphoral islands
Dip in the Mediterranean
Lit by a sailing moon
A grecian fleet.
Green pencil in hand
I sit down and write;
The sea's not very far
The past is even closer.
Let future fallacies
Fall forth from every pocket
Legs dipped to the knees
In a Jewish Tashlikh (*)
Billions of tyres
All used, will become
A bridge which links
Gibraltar to New York.
A precipice of car skeletons
Will rise in North Africa;
All who see it from Malta
Catch a plane to India.
An enormous Japanese lantern
Illumines the island of Cyprus;
That giant paper accordion
Will sob until it shreds.

My wife a Greek seagoddess;
As those familiar know;
Ancient rhythmical ethics
The cat swallowing the crab.
I am Poseidon fleeing
The wrath of my brother who hurls
Senseless devouring lightning
From a barren heart, heedless to sacrifice.
I have seen harsh sights
Pregnant with ecological hazard;
My own angelic siren
Becomes a drowning cow.
Our numbers dwindle daily
Even the sea recedes;
Our knowledge sails ahead
And we just follow after.
In submarine caravan
We spy the shores of the Land.
Like nymphic fish we glide
Through barbs in sunken fences.
So now, one final warning
To chanting creatures of the sea:
Death lurks on the shore
Certain death on every shore.
(*) T a s h l i k h: The traditional yearly Jewish 'Casting off' of one's sins,
a ceremony conducted at the edge of running water.
After the print, the lithographs were painted by Cohen in pale water colors and then signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Each set of eight lithographs was packed in a grey cardboard folder which included a copy of the full poem - the whole edition included 25 folders - the set presented here is numbered 16 / 25.

המושגים "איכות הסביבה", "ריאות ירוקות", ו-"מחזור" לא נשמעו בשיח הציבורי של ישראל של ראשית שנות השבעים של המאה העשרים, ואם אינני טועה, חלקם אף לא היו קיימים כיצירים לשוניים. ביטוי ברור לכך רואים בשם שמאיר ויזלטיר בחר לשירו - אקולוגיה. לכאורה הדעת היתה נתונה לעניינים אחרים, בראש ובראשונה בטחוניים ומדיניים. יש כאלה שיאמרו, ובצדק רב, שגם היום חלק לא קטן מן השיח המתקיים בנושאי איכות הסביבה הוא יותר בבחינת מס שפתיים מאשר שינוי אמיתי בחשיבה ובעשיה, ולכן השיר של ויזלטיר מעניין מאוד מן ההבט הסוציולוגי-היסטורי שלו. מדוע בעצם נכתב מתי שנכתב? האם המשורר הרחיק לראות ולצפות את הבעיות הגדולות של העתיד?
כפי שניתן לקרוא בצילום הטקסט שלפנינו, השיר "אקולוגיה" נכתב בתל-אביב, בחודש יוני 1973. ישראל נמצאת במרחק כמה חודשים מן המפץ הגדול של אוקטובר 1973, אבל לא קברניטיה, ובודאי שלא אזרחיה, מודעים למה שהעתיד המאוד קרוב צופן בחובו. ההרגשה הכללית משקפת מציאות מדומה וכוזבת. החזית הדרומית של ישראל רגועה אחרי כמה שנים מדממות. למעשה, יחסית לכל זמן אחר, ישראל נחה שקטה ובוטחת בגבולותיה הרחבים שלאחר מלחמת ששת הימים, ומתנהלת כמעצמה איזורית שאין איש יכול לכפות עליה את רצונותיו. מן האשלייה העמוקה הזו, נולדת המחשבה שאולי זו הפעם הראשונה בתולדות ישראל המודרנית שבה ניתן לזקוף את הראש ממאבק הקיום וההישרדות ולהתחבר לשאלות הגלובליות שעל סדר יומן של המדינות החזקות והנאורות. שאלות אקולוגיות? מאיר ויזלטיר הוא משורר עם קול "חזק", גבהים רטוריים ופאתוס. ביוני 1973 המצב הישראלי נראה גם לו נינוח מדי, שלו מדי, מכדי להצדיק אמירות פואטיות חריפות, והוא יוצא לשיט תענוגות בים התיכון, על גבי ספינה יוונית, אל נינווה הפואטית שלו. מסיפון ספינתו הוא נושא נאום חוצב להבות על המפגעים האקולוגיים שיטביעו את כל העולם כולו בהררי זבל, ומזהיר אותנו מן המוות שאורב בכל חוף. כמובן שכל אלה הם דברי אמת, והמחיר שגובה כיום ההרס הסביבתי חסר הרסן של העבר, מוחשי ומעיק. עם זאת, קשה להשתחרר מן התחושה שהמודעות הסביבתית של ויזלטיר של יוני 1973, יותר משהיא חזון מרחיק ראות של יונה החדש, היא חלק מעצימת עיניים כללית של "זבולון לחוף ימים ישכון" לנוכח הגל הגדול המסתער עליו.
השותפות היצירתית בין נחום כהן, צייר, ארכיטקט ומתכנן אורבני לבין המשורר והמתרגם מאיר ויזלטיר הולידה את קלסר הליתוגרפיות העצמתיות המוצגות פה לפניכם. הליתוגרפיות נולדו בהשראת הפואמה אך כאשר אני מתבונן בהן המקור מתייתר ועזות הביטוי של נחום כהן ושפת הציור המקורית שלו כובשות אותי. מהדורת האמן של "אקולוגיה" הודפסה במהדורה מצומצמת של 25 עותקים במרץ 1975. כל סט, הכולל 8 ליתוגרפיות חתומות ומתוארכות על ידי האמן נחום כהן, נארז בקלסר אפור וכולל גם עותק מודפס של הפואמה של ויזטיר בעברית ובאנגלית.
