It is quite rare to see a painter's work at its tautest intensity, unshelled, as it were, to its most intense naivete, without any protective crust of derivations or emulations between us and it. This is what we have in Joan Miro's work: a charged wire without insulation, a primary simplicity of forms, a vitality of inevitable relationships allowed to take their natural order, pictures which seem to have come to life on the canvas, rather than have been painted.

Joan Miro (1893-1983) declared: "Forms take a reality for me as I work... rather than setting out to paint something, I begin painting and as I paint the picture begins to assert itself or suggest itself under my brush." This important and comprehensive art monograph by James Johnson Sweeney (1900-1986) who was the director of the Guggenheim Museum, enables us to see how Miro's art provides the compassing of a primary vision and a pictorial recording of it which is primitive in the good sense of the word - always a paring down towards this subtle simplicity - achieving a maximum intensity with a minimum of means.

JOAN MIRO Lithographs Volume I - Michel Leiris & Fernand Mourlot
Widely celebrated as one of the outstanding graphic artists of the 20th century, Joan Miro (1893-1983) was producing lithographs of tremendous scope and power since the 1940s. Although his first lithographs date from 1930, it was not until a decade later that Miro became truly aware of the great variety and quality of results that could be obtained with lithography and became deeply involved with the techniques of the medium.
This volume, a magnificent testimony to the brilliant achievements of Miro as a graphic artist, is a complete catalogue raisonne of the 189 lithographs that the inimitable Catalan artist created between 1930 and 1952. In addition to the 189 finished lithographs, it includes reproductions of several variant versions and rejected versions of these works as well as 11 original lithographs created especially for this volume and suitable for framing. Here is a basic reference book for art collectors, historians, and admirers of the graphics of Miro that captures, by means of both text and illustrations, the spontaneity and inventiveness that pervade the work of this master.
Joan Miro Lithographs by Leiris & Mourlot
Michel Leiris was a noted French art critic, ethnologist, avant garde poet, and essayist. He had spent much of his life observing "primitive peoples" and was a specialist in Black African art. As a prominent figure in the French art world, Mr. Leiris participated in the development of the surrealist movement. His introduction to The Prints of Joan Miro, published in New York in 1947, was one of the earliest acclamations of the great surrealist painter's abilities as a lithographer.
Fernand Mourlot's renowned printing shop in Paris, Imprimerie Mourlot, was a major world center of high-grade color lithography work. Mr. Mourlot printed the lithographs and engravings of many of the most important twentieth century artists, including Matisse, Cocteau, Braque, Giacometti, Delvaux, Leger, Vasarely, Derain, Picasso, Chagall, Masson, and Buffet. Many of the painters, printmakers, and designers with whom he collaborated, were close personal friends who valued his advice on the selection of colors and inks. Mourlot was printing Miro's lithographs since 1948 - all illustrations and the original Joan Miro lithographs were printed in France by Mourlot especially for this edition.

Homage to Joan Miro with Original Lithograph - Special Issue by XXe Siecle
This special issue of the XXe Siecle artistic review on the oeuvre of Joan Miro was edited and published by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro in 1972 and includes marvelous color plates and black and white illustrations of the best works of Joan Miro. It is a comprehensive artist's monograph in a beautiful album format with an original lithograph work specially prepared by Miro for this XXe Siecle edition and an article written by Joan Miro - Je reve d'un grand atelier - I dream of a large atelier - and a rare writing by Ernest Hemingway on Miro's painting "La ferme".
