In the life story of many artists you can find the desire to combine art and career. The painter David Hendler (1904 - 1984) was among the few "individualists to the extreme" that have chosen differently. His personal character and his qualities as a painter and a drawer are outstanding. Hendler was born in Kiev, Russia. He acquired his education and ideology as an artist in Prague, the city to which his family moved from Russia. There he studied drawing from Prof. Pichel of the academy of art.
At the age of 20 he left Prague and went to the land of Israel (then called Palestine). He had consciously decided not to make a career out of his art but rather take a proletary approach towards it. He used to go from door to door in Tel-Aviv and offer his paintings and drawings like a peddler, for ridiculously low prices. This way he turned his back to galleries, museums, and any other representatives of the art's establishment, and chose a life of hardship and poverty.

אביבה אורי, צעירה יפה ותוססת שזה עתה נישאה, עם שאיפות גדולות וכמיהה אדירה להפוך לאמנית טוטאלית, בחרה בדוד הנדלר להיות לה למורה לציור. שנה קודם לכן, ב-1943, לקחה אורי שיעורים פרטיים בציור אצל הצייר משה קסטל הכריזמתי ואיש העולם הגדול, אולם שיעורים אלה התפתחו לכדי רומן סוער שסיכן את חיי משפחתה. הבחירה בהנדלר, השחפן והעני שהיה מבוגר ממנה בכעשרים שנה, היתה לכאורה נסיון שלא לחזור על תסבוכות העבר, אבל התוצאה היתה הפוכה. ב-1947, חודשים לאחר הולדת בתה, נטשה אורי את בעלה, לקחה את התינוקת ועברה לחיות עם הנדלר בבית ישן עם גג מחורר בצפון תל-אביב (פנקס פינת וייצמן של היום). סיפור חייהם המשותפים של דוד הנדלר ואביבה אורי סבוך, קשה, סוער ומעציב. אני חוזר ומביט ברישום האישה היושבת, שעונה בעייפות על ידה השמאלית, תומכת בידה הימנית בראשה של התינוקת המחותלת. רגליה, שכפותיהן נתונות בסנדלי כפכף קלים, משוכלות, ומבטה כבד, מעורפל,- איזשהו סימן שאלה בעיניה שאיני מצליח לפענח מה טיבו. עולם שלם יש בריפרוף הקווים המושלם הזה.
