David Hendler - Charcoal on Paper - Aviva Uri Portrait

The Israeli painter David Hendler (1904-1984) tried to make a living by going from door to door and selling his paintings at a very modest price. I guess that he developed an understanding as to what kind of motifs go well with his potential customers. As in all door to door sales, the average customer is the lady of the house - in Tel Aviv of that period (the 40s and 50s of the former century), the potential customers came from middle class families were the house wife was the one who took responsibility over the esthetics decisions.

Hendler (who was also called "the painter of Tel-Aviv") chose horses, donkeys and carriages as the main subjects of the drawings for his peddling operation because he knew that these beautiful and idyllic semi-rural scenes will melt the hearts of the lady buyers and will not raise any antagonistic feelings. The following drawing of the mysterious and restrained woman's portrait is a completely different story.

Aviva Uri Portrait by David Hendler Israeli Painter David Hendler -

Hendler painted Aviva Uri, the love of his life, again and again and again. Obsessively. But each time, he captured a different mood of her and this is the ingenuity of a great drawer - not only that he grabs the looks of you but also expresses what you feel inside. The Aviva Uri in front of us looks determined - her gaze has a clear focal point, her lips are tightened and her monastic headdress cannot mask her ambitions. David Hendler drawn this charcoal on paper drawing with true passion - it was not intended to play a role in his struggle for existence but served as an outlet for the blazing fire of his inner emotions.
