The Jewish spice box (AKA perfume box or "Teyvat Besamim" in Hebrew) is one of the more interesting theme objects in Yosl Bergner work. The Ashkenazi Jewish ornamented spice box contains fragrant sweet smelling spices which are sniffed at the close of the Jewish Shabbat as part of the Havdalah ceremony. The delicious and wondrous smells of the spices coming from the box would act as a reminder of the good times that were had during the Shabbat and make people remember fondly the holiday and what it stands for. The sweet smell of the spices tries to compensate and balance the sadness that one feels during the transition from the Shabbat to a week day.
Bergner's spice box ("Suman Box" in Yiddish) radiates simple and honest joy and glee. Although "officially" this drawing should bear the title "still life" and symbolize the grief one feels when the Shabbat departs, it leaves the opposite impression - it beams of life and energetic restlessness. Sometimes it just looks to me like a clown jumping and dancing. What put all this mirth into it? Is it going high on its own odor? Come on Yosl, give me some of this stuff!

Yosl Bergner שהוא "תמיד מצייר אנשים, אפילו כשהוא מצייר סירים ומחבתות ..." ולא
סתם אנשים אלא פליטים, ניצולים, שמסומלים ומוסווים כחפצי יום יום, כלי בישול, מנורות
נפט, קנקנים, מגהצים ופומפיות שנעקרו ממדפי המטבח ומשידות הבית והחלו משייטים על פני
הארץ - חפצים שהפיחו בהם חיים והפכו לדמויות. מבין כולן אני אוהב את תיבת הבשמים שמשמשת
להבדיל בין קודש לחול בצאת השבת:
"תקנו
חכמים לברך על בשמים ולהריחם במוצאי שבת, מפני שאחר שהשבת יוצאת - הנשמה היתירה
מסתלקת, והנפש דואבת, וכדי להשיב את רוחה, מריחים בשמים, שאמרו חכמים שהנשמה נהנית
מהם. ואף אדם שאינו חש כאב בנפשו על צאת השבת, על ידי תקנה זו ייתן אל ליבו את מעלת
השבת, שהיה ראוי לו להיות מיצר על צאתה ולהשיב את רוחו בריח טוב."

אז יוסל לוקח את תיבת הבשמים התקנית של יהודי מזרח אירופה ומוסיף
לה עוד קומה, ועוד דגלים (ואולי אלו ידיים), ועוד חלונות (ואולי אלו עיניים), ועוד
שולחנון (ואולי אלו רגליים) והייצור התלוש הזה מרחף מעל חוקי הגרביטציה, צוחק, קורץ
