Pablo Picasso 1950-1968 by Pierre Dufour
Pierre Dufour, the author of the Biographical and Critical Study PICASSO 1950-1968 observes the works of Pablo Picasso with a fresh eye and from a different angle which, unlike many of the authors who wrote about Picasso's oeuvre, does not limit its perspectives to the heroic period of Cubism in the artist's works. The Cubism was undoubtedly of great and even decisive importance but what's more important in that period, according to Dufour, is that the tool and the approach that the Cubism forged were subsequently utilized by Picasso for very different purposes.

At the start, the Cubist painters were faced with the work of their elders, most of whom set more store on the content of a picture than on what Juan Gris called its "architecture", which in the Cubists' eyes was what counted most. On the other hand, the rapid development of photography at the early 20s, had freed painting from the fetters of servile imitation. The Cubists' experiments led to the invention of a handwriting which, while safeguarding the structure of the picture as an object, enabled them to represent the world around them without imitating it.

Picasso went further in this direction and made free with the handwriting he himself invented by constantly enriching it in a way which enabled him to unburden his soul more and more. His art has always been autobiographical and has grown increasingly so with advancing age until it reached to the point where it could easily be called narrative art, as he himself said "After all, a picture that tells a story is not such a bad thing".

Picasso draws his private diary "Executing a work is a way of keeping one's diary" he said to Teriade in 1932.
Obsessive? Revealing? In the space of two months (from November 23, 1953, to February 3, 1954) Picasso did no less than a hundred and eighty pen and wash drawings on the theme of the Old Painter and his Model. They revealed his inner accentuation - irony conceals the secrets confided and exploits a contrast: the contrast between the aged painter of the academic type, long-haired, short-sighted, meticulous, engrossed in his palette and his canvas - some of the drawings show us grotesque art-lovers examining the latter with a magnifying glass - and the young model who nonchalantly displays her splendid, sensuous beauty. On occasion, the ironic distance is further stressed by certain elements of the theme and the works in which this occurs are undoubtedly the strangest and the most engaging - the old painter is replaced by an an old, grotesque dwarf as the doting lover of a beautiful young model.

Y probaria a hacerlo a mi manera, olvidando a Velazquez. La prueba me llevaria de seguro a modificar la luz o a cambiarla, con motivo de haber cambiado de lugar a un personaje. Asi, poquito a poco, iria pintando unas Meninas que parecerian detestables al copista de oficio; no serian las que el creeria haber visto en la tela de Velazquez, pero serian mis Meninas...", etc.

Fue casual que se me grabase en la memoria lo que le habia oido decir.

Although some art critics describe Picasso's late works as "paintings about being an old man" or even as "pornographic fantasies of an impotent old man" or "the slapdash works of an artist who was past his prime" I personally see these paintings as fascinating stories which came out of the mind of a great story teller.
"Of course, one never knows what's going to come out, but as soon as the drawing gets underway, a story or an idea is born. And that's it. Then the story grows, like theater or life - and the drawing is turned into other drawings, a real novel. It's great fun, believe me. At least, I enjoy myself no end inventing these stories, and I spend hour after hour while I draw, observing my creatures and thinking about the mad things they're up to. Basically, it's my way of writing fiction."

Homage to Pablo Picasso with Original Lithograph - Special Issue by XXe Siecle
This special issue of the XXe Siecle artistic review edited by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro is a beautiful retrospective of Pablo Picasso with 28 color plates (including 7 specially printed linocuts) and 150 black and white illustrations - a comprehensive art monograph in luxurious album format which includes an original lithograph specially drawn by Picasso for the XXe Siecle No 10 issue in 1958.
San Lazzaro gathered some of the best art historians and art critics as well as Picasso's friends and companions to write the many interesting articles in the album. The gallery of writers includes Rafael Alberti and Josep Palau I Fabre who wrote autobiographical notes as well as Daniel Henry Kahnweiler who published the content of conversations he had with Picasso.
Guillaume Apollinaire, Paul Eluard, Man Ray, Roland Penrose, Julio Gonzalez, Raymond Cogniat and Henri Matarasso discuss Picasso's artistic approaches and Jean-Louis Ferrier analyzes the "Guernica". Pablo Picasso - The Frugal Repast - 1904 - Etching
"The Frugal Repast" was etched by Picasso in 1905 - at that time Picasso couldn't afford a proper copper etching plate and worked on a used zinc plate, which still bore traces of a landscape image, scraping his lines with a sewing needle. Copies of the print, which depicts an emaciated blind man and his consort hovering over some heels of bread and a cheap bottle of wine, were then offered for sale for a single gold franc, about five dollars. When none sold, the struggling artist gave them away to his friends. Read more about Picasso's early works in John Seed's excellent article in huffingtonpost.com. Although the Frugal Repast is considered to be one of the most wonderful print works in the renown "Circus Series" published in 1913, not all the prints in this series were of circus people, nor were all his models from Montmartre. Scenes such as, The Frugal Repast were memories of Picasso's native country; the poor, the blind, the beggars, the emaciated figures - he had met them all on Spanish soil.
Daniel Henry Kahnweiler once said: "With Picasso, art is never mere rhetoric, his work is inseparable from his life.... It is a confession to mankind." (Daniel Henry Kahnweiler, Pablo Picasso, Radierungen und Lithographien, 1905-1951, Munich 1952).

The graphic arts have held an unending fascination for Picasso throughout his career. This volume of his works from the golden years 1955-1965 provides ample proof that Picasso's capacity for invention and innovation was growing as he was progressing into his later years. He drew upon the full store of his resources and memories, using all the widely differing techniques that have become part of him over the years.
Several reasons can be found for Picasso's attraction to graphic techniques. For one thing, they offered the possibility of preserving, for all time, every intermediate stage of the evolving work; in this they are unlike oil painting, in which the later stages of the work hide the earlier. For Picasso, the successive states of a print, amounted almost to variations on a chosen theme; in a sense, they provided him with a visible record of his own creative process. Another reason for his lively interest in the graphic techniques was their relative flexibility, the surprises that proofs may give rise to, the invitation to indulge in "accidents" in printing. A third reason should perhaps be considered the most important of all: the graphic arts provided an outlet for Picasso's pleasure in narrative. He gave it free rein when working with the pencil or burin.
Excepting only woodcuts, Picasso has made substantial contributions to every branch of the graphic arts. To cite only one example, he has devised a method all his own for the linoleum cut, whereby it is possible to print as many as twelve colors from the same plate.

Pablo Picasso painted and drew his second wife Jacqueline Roque hundreds of times. Jacqueline's features albeit stylized, are instantly recognizable in the vast oeuvre of the Spanish artist's between the years 1953-1973. The two masterpiece portraits dated 1957 presented here (pages 18 & 19 of Picasso: His Graphic Work Volume 2) are the peaks of Picasso's prints of that period and a pictorial evidence to the outstanding sensual yet innocent beauty of Picasso's beloved muse Jacqueline Roque.

בשונה ממרבית נשותיו ואהובותיו (ראה רשימה מקוצרת בפוסט Picasso's Lovers) של האמן האקסטרווגנטי והתוסס, הייתה ז'קלין רוק טיפוס ביישן ונוטה להסתגר, יצור זערורי עם עיני שקד גדולות, שערה ארוך ושחור והופעתה מרשימה למרות הילדות הקשה ורצופת הטרגדיות שעברה: אביה נטש את משפחתו בעודה תינוקת ואמה, תופרת קשת יום, נפטרה בפתאומיות כשז'קלין היתה בת 18. כנראה שהשילוב של תמימות וחושניות שמצא בה שבו את ליבו של פיקסו וכבר מתחילת היכרותם שררה ביניהם קרבה ושותפות אינטימיות שנמשכה לאורך עשרים שנות חייו האחרונות של האמן. ז'קלין היתה האשה היחידה שהורשתה לשהות בסטודיו בזמן שפיקסו צייר והוא אכן צייר ורשם את דמותה מאות פעמים ופניה המחודדים והמיוחדים שימשו כמקור השראה לטובות שבעבודותיו המאוחרות.

Picasso Lithographs by Fernand Mourlot - ARABESQUE
On November 2nd 1945, Picasso came to work at Moulot's print workshop in Rue de Chabrol and scarcely left the premises for four months. He would come in at 9 o'clock in the morning and work continuously until late at night, often after 8 p.m. The artist tried out and utilized all the different techniques: transfer paper, stone, zinc, crayon, pen, wash drawing, etc., employing all the old methods of the craft. The red Arabesque presented above is one of the most beautiful outputs of that period signed 12 November 1945.
All states of each lithograph are reproduced in the book; details below the reproductions indicate the format of the proof paper. Since almost all the prints were made on thick Arches wove paper, Mourlot felt it necessary to only mention the exceptions. Finally, all the lithographs in signed and numbered runs, were published by the Galerie Louise Leiris of Paris. The format, mentioned in inches and centimeters, refers to the lithograph itself except where otherwise stated.

The artist never submits to his material; he makes it the instrument of his will. Prehistoric man facing the wall of his cave, Goya or Daumier their lithographic stones. Durer his copperplate. Michelangelo the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Degas his linocuts. Matisse his collages, and the many other great artists, have all been involved in the same eternal quest. The material is the slave, not the master who imposes his laws and restrictions.
The artist remains a prey to the one irrational obsession that urges him ever on to express what he and other men have seen, but not with the same eyes, and to imbue it with the magnetic power of thought. He loads himself with work which, by a cumulative process, confers on him a greater liberty: that of possessing an instrument, a tool, a way of being, a craft so finely tempered that his hand lacks no skill. He knows. He knows immediately, or perhaps he takes a long time to know; but from the moment that he knows this liberty, there remains for him only the shadowy problem of the iron wall of which Van Gogh spoke: "What is it to be an artist? How can one achieve the desired result? One has to pass through the invisible iron wall that seems to stand between what one feels and what one is capable of. How can one pass through this barrier? To cast oneself blindly against it achieves nothing. To my mind one has to undermine, to file away at the wall, gradually, patiently..." Nothing counts but this "invisible iron wall". What the artist wants to achieve; what he does achieve; the innovative or the destructive effort. And intimately linked with this difficulty is the desire to fulfill oneself, by producing from one's very being something that has never before had existence. The wall of iron must be crossed and to this victory must at times be added that of forcing a material to submit, with the craftsman's joy in dominating and twisting the ancient laws.

Picasso's Picassos by David Douglas Duncan
Picasso's Picassos is a magnificent display of Picasso's personal collection of his own paintings, a milestone of art history revealing for the first time some of the finest and most exciting pictures of his long career.
David Douglas Duncan, world famous photographer and author was one of the
few people ever privileged to view the fabulous treasures of
La Californie where
Pablo Picasso stores his private collection - more than 500 of his most
important paintings, representing every major period and spanning more than
sixty years. Duncan spent more than six months photographing Picasso's Picassos,
often with the artist himself at his shoulder, photographing each painting
four times to ensure absolute perfection of color. Then Picasso and Duncan spent

Paintings ranging from nine feet wide to a few inches square were examined and photographed. There are religious subjects predating the beginning of the 20th century, painted in Barcelona when Picasso was fifteen years old. Others, from the first years of the 20th century, reveal the seeds of Cubism. One extraordinary chapter is reproduced in its entirety - a full month's production of twenty three major works; painted in 1936, these canvases have been unknown - their existence not even suspected - until publication of this book. There are yet other pictures painted when Spain, his motherland, was crushed by civil war, and his canvases show her agony; paintings made when he was heartbroken; when he was in love; portraits of children in which their world and his are one; collages, still lifes and canvases revealing whole races of creatures never seen on earth.
