Emil Nolde (1867-1956), the leading German Expressionist painter was born in the village of Nolde in Nordfriesland near the Danish border. At the age of seventeen he became an apprentice of a wood carver near Flensburg, while at the same time he practiced his skills as a draughtsman. Between 1888 and 1897 he travelled to Milan, Vienna and Munich, taught technical draughtsmanship and took evening classes in art and painting. In 1898, after the commercial success of his postcards series with caricatures of personified mountains, Nolde decided to cut short his apprenticeship and moved to Munich to work as a painter.
This unique art monograph - Emil Nolde Ungemalte Bilder (Emil Nolde Unpainted Pictures) by the renowned art historian Werner Haftmann presents the works of Emil Nolde at the time of the Third Reich. Although he joined the Nazi party in the early 30s, Nolde's paintings were confiscated from the museums and his work was slandered as Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) in 1937. From 1941 on, he was prohibited from painting at all. Nolde who was in his seventies when this happened, secretly continued to paint and made small scale watercolor sketches, the size of postcards, which he called "the unpainted pictures".

Although Emil Nolde cannot be considered primarily as a painter of flowers and animals, these subjects - particularly flowers - occupy an important position in his total work. They are an expression of happiness and of joie de vivre - although not in any outward sense - for there were only few occasions for joy in Nolde's life.
His most rewarding hours may have been those in which he was able to absorb himself completely in nature, when he believed that through the act of creation he was participating in the creative process of nature. Only during these exhilarating moments did he lose his feelings of isolation, of being condemned to remain outside the world of meaningful human relationships. The flower painting of Emil Nolde are evidence of joy in a person who was inclined to regard life as difficult.
The 24 large colour plates in this book have been reproduced directly from the original watercolors. Thus an unusually faithful match has been attained, giving the reproductions much of the quality of the originals. Martin Urban is the head of the Nolde Foundation in Seebull and the author of many other books on Nolde.

The watercolours of Emil Nolde (1867-1956) are among the most beautiful and important works of the 20th century. There are a few painters whose watercolours form such a significant portion of their total output, and of these a large part is devoted to landscapes.
Emil Nolde - Landscapes: Watercolors and Drawings by Martin Urban
The Emil Nolde - Landscapes volume which includes pastels and drawings too, contains examples of all periods of Nolde's creative life. In countless pictures he has shown the landscapes around his birthplace in north of Germany, with the wide, flat plains and the clouds drifting slowly across the sky. In these you can sense the nearness of the sea, which man has been wrestling with for centuries past; you can see the peasant's houses, with their steeply pitched roofs, clustered together on the isolated hills as a protection against the sea which, years ago used to flood the land every autumn and spring.
Sea and sky are experienced as fateful forces of nature. The setting sun transforms the sky into a glowing sea of color as twilight gradually envelopes the earth. The sky becomes the stage for cosmic events, for the struggle between light and darkness.
Nolde is equally interested in lesser dramas. He is entranced by the nuances produced by the light on a rainy day, with its gradation of colors from blue to green, tinged with yellow and red. But above all he is excited by the full strong colors and the dramatic happenings of nature.
In 1930 Nolde spent some months on the North Sea island of Sylt. He painted as if in a frenzy and turned out six large sea pictures and many magnificent watercolors of the sea. Besides the landscapes of his North Frisian homeland, Nolde has also drawn on the experience of his travels. The Swiss mountains landscapes are amongst Nolde's most enchanting and mature works. In some of them the rich colors - deep blue, violet, dark green, pale yellow and brown - blend into each other in such a way that the actual forms of the mountains, the valleys, the patches of sky are barely discernible. The same applies to some of his other freely painted landscapes - are they of clouds, mountains or sea? These pictures are deeply personal, expressions of passionate and sensitive feelings.
