חנה אורלוף - ד"ר חיים גמזו
The sculptor Chana Orloff (1888-1968) came to Eretz-lsrael with her family in 1905 when she was about 18 and worked as a cutter and seamstress in Jaffa. In 1910 she has been offered a teaching position in these subjects at the Herzliya high school and therefore she decided to go to Paris to become certified in cutting and dressmaking but then she discovered the artist in her. Orloff discovered the artist in her on her arrival in Paris, which was then the world's art capital and a melting-pot for all the foreign artists who had been drawn to the creative spirit that animated the city - she never returned to teach cutting and dressmaking at the Herzliya high school or at any other school.
This wonderful artist monograph written and edited by Dr Haim Gamzu, presents the beautiful sculptures of Orloff and enables us to have a glimpse at her personal working process and her artistic approach. It also presents Orloff fascinating reminisces from her close relations with Modigliani, Pascin, Soutine and Georges Kars.
חנה אורלוף Chana Orloff 1888-1968, אחת מחשובי הפסלים במאה הקודמת, הגיעה לפריז ב-1910 לאחר שהוצעה לה משרה כרכזת מגמת הגזירה והתפירה בגימנסיה הרצליה התל-אביבית. אורלוף שנסעה לפריז בכדי להשלים את לימודיה ולקבל את ההסמכות הדרושות בגזירה ובתפירה, פגשה שם את המשורר ארי יוסטמן Ary Justman שקירב אותה אל חוגי הבוהמה הפריזאית השוקקים של אותה תקופה והכיר לה את שגאל, סוטין, ליפשיץ, מודליאני, פסקין ואוטרילו.
וכך מתארת חנה אורלוף את ההרפתקאה המופלאה ששינתה את מסלול חייה:
מקץ ארבע שנים לשבתי בארץ יצאתי לפאריז. נקלעתי שם לחבורת אמנים צעירים שעסקו באמנות. היה ביניהם פסל גרוזיני צעיר. פעם סרתי אליו ומצאתיו נרגש מאד. חולצתו פרומה, שערות ראשו פרועות, שרווליו מופשלים והוא מתהלך בחדרו אנה ואנה. נדהמתי למראהו ושאלתיו לפשר הדבר.
"מה את יודעת על לבטיו של האמן! היש לך מושג מה קשה היא האמנות? מה קשה להיות פסל? לעתים כלים ממש כוחותי במאמץ להגיע למשהו חדש, למשהו מיוחד, לדבר שאינו שגרה, אך הכל לשוא!" הייתי שובבה וצעירה ועל דרך ההלצה אמרתי: "לא, אתה מגזים, ידידי, האמנות אינה כה קשה כפי שאתה מתאר אותה"
"אה! - התרתח - האמנות אינה קשה? אדרבא, נסי-נא!" ותוך כדי דברו דחפני אל הכן עליו היה מוטל גוש חומר נטול-צורה, תקע לתוך ידי את האזמל וצרח: "אדרבא, נסי-נא!".
נטלתי את האיזמל ובבת-צחוק קונדסית התחלתי מעבירה אותו על הטיט. אך תוך כדי כך שמטתי את האיזמל והתחלתי ללוש בחומר. אצבעותי שחשו פתאום את המגע עם החומר, החלו מגששות בו כמחפשות לחשוף בו שמץ של צורה. כל זה לא ארך אלא רגעים מספר והנה החומר הגולמי לובש לאט לאט צורה ואני חשה מעין זרם מופלא העובר מן החומר אל אצבעותי ומאצבעותי אל החומר. הסתערתי על גוש אדמה לח זה כאיכר המסתער עם להב מחרשתו על תלמי שדהו שלא חרש בו מזה שנים, ובשצף קצף המשכתי ללוש בעיסה הכבדה הזאת. ידי מלטפות אותה מעגלות את זוויותיה, מחדדות את קצותיה, מגפפות את כדוריותה, נוגעות נגיעה קלה במה שהפך להיות, כעבור שעה קלה, דיוקן...
כשיכורה עסוקה הייתי במלאכה זו ולא הרגשתי בזמן החולף, עד שלבסוף, משראיתי מה עוללו ידי לחומר שקעתי מתוך אפיסת כוחות לתוך כורסא ובושתי ממעשה הילדות שחמדתי לי... הפסל הגרוזיני נעץ בי מבט של אינקויזיטור ושאלני:
- "כמה זמן את מתעסקת בפיסול?"
- "מעולם לא פיסלתי, עניתיו, זו לי הפעם הראשונה בחיי שאני נוגעת בחומר".
האיש הצעיר פרץ בצעקה: - "את משקרת! את משטה בי! את רוצה להתפאר שבמחצית שעה ניתן לך להשיג מה שעולה לאחר במאמצים של ימים על ימים!" הוא רתח כולו מחימה וכמעט שגרשני מסדנתו.
יצאתי מחדרו מוסערת כולי, הרגשתי שמשהו אירע עתה בחיי, משהו חשוב, גדול, גורלי...

Anna Ticho
(1894-1980) occupies a unique place among Israeli artists - she has never
followed a movement nor has she belonged to any formal group - she has always
gone her own way. Although in former years she sometimes tried her hands in
painting in oils, throughout her life her true vocation has been drawing. During
the many years she lived in Jerusalem she became an inspired interpreter of
the city's landscapes and people.
Today Jerusalem is a busy and crowded city, but nothing on this activity is
apparent in Anna Ticho's drawings. Her Jerusalem lies behind the scenes of daily
life, beyond the lively streets and humming highways where the Mountains of
Judea extend their silent, timeless presence.
This beautiful art album, edited by
Dr. Willem Sandberg, with its 56 delicately wrought images, depicts the
development of the artist's work on her way from the portrayal of nature to the
self portrait. A must have for every Israeli art collector with an introduction
essay by
Elisheva Cohen - the former chief curator of the
Israel
Museum as well as a list of the artist's works and biographical notes.

אנה טיכו 1894-1980 Anna Ticho החלה לצייר את סמטאות ירושלים והנופים ההרריים שמסביבה רק בשנות העשרים לאחר סיום מלחמת העולם הראשונה - רישומי עפרון שחור, חדים, מדוייקים ומקצועיים - כל אבן במקומה, כל עץ לפרטיו, כל בית וחלונותיו. אני מניח שזו הייתה דרכה להתחבר למציאות הארץ-ישראלית הכאוטית שנחתה עליה כשהגיעה למזרח התיכון - להעביר את הגבעות החשופות והנופים הירושלמים המוזנחים ומוכי השרב אל הנייר בדייקנות ייקית מתעדת.
הספר הנהדר שלפניכם יצא לאור ב-1971 בעריכת היסטוריון האמנות ההולנדי ד"ר וילם סנדברג Dr. Willem Sandberg שהתגורר בירושלים בשנות השישים, כיהן כיו"ר הוועד המנהל של מוזיאון ישראל והכיר את אנה טיכו במשך שנים רבות. ד"ר סנדברג מנסה לשרטט את דרכה האמנותית של אנה טיכו מציורי הנוף והדמויות המוקדמים אל הדיוקנאות העצמיים המאוחרים.

Michael Druks belongs to the generation of artists who grew up and were shaped in the "little" Israel before the Six Day War. In his works in the 60's he focused mainly on painting and assemblage works. In the 70's, after his move to London, he created video works, body works and a renowned series of mapping works which reflected the spirit of time and were shown in major leading galleries and museums in Europe.
The beautiful artist monograph "Travels in Druksland" by Galia Bar Or proposes a broad and comprehensive retrospective gaze which includes a rich chapter on Druks paintings as well as a reconstruction of constitutive works and performances, films and video works that have become milestones in the oeuvre of one of the most powerful and total artists that came out of Israel.

Harold Rubin is a painter, a musician, an architect and a freedom fighter. This is how the talented multi-dimensional artist Harold Rubin describes his coming to the world and the way he planned his future:
Born: Friday 13th May 1932 7.00 am - Breach birth. Sickly child, protected by his mother. Started questioning the wisdom of God at the age of 5 after an incident with his black nanny and convicts working on the road on his way to nursery school. Decided to do something about his frail form at the age of 8 and started to play soccer and to swim.
And this is how Harold Rubin introduces the exciting drawing in this very special book:
Crow inhabited my head after the experience of Ted Hughes CROW poems.
A most compelling creature compulsively self-propelled without choice - a built-in sense of survival - instinctive - primitive - towards death - life itself the morality - God an exhausted idealist.
Crow participates - love, sex, religion, war, hate, scream, father, mother, son, cruel, pain, Crow observes images, demanding comment.
These drawings are not illustrations of Hughes poems, but an attempt to give expression, volition or whatever to that remarkable bird flapping around my skull.

האמן הישראלי הרב-תחומי הרולד רובין הוא אמן לוחם. בדרום אפריקה, ארץ הולדתו לחם כנגד האפלייה הגזעית, מדיניות האפרטהיד והרדיקאליות הדתית. ב-1963 הועמד לדין על שצייר את מעמד צליבת ישו בצורה שיש בה לפי החוק הדרום אפריקאי "חילול השם" - ישו בציורו של רובין, גולם בדמות גבר שחור עירום שזיקפתו לפניו וראשו ראש מפלצת. הכיתוב שבהקדשה "אני סולח לך אלוהים כי אינך יודע מה שאתה עושה" היה פרפרזה עוקצנית למשפט המחילה הנוצרי "אלוהים, סלח להם כי הם אינם יודעים מה שהם עושים".
בעקבות המשפט עזב רובין את דרום אפריקה, הגיע לישראל וגם כאן המשיך להילחם בעיקר כנגד האופי המיליטריסטי של מדינת ישראל והאספקטים הגזעניים של החברה הישראלית. רובין המגדיר עצמו כאתיאיסט לא חסך שבטו גם מן הממסד הדתי ומרבה לשלב בעבודותיו ובהופעותיו כמוסיקאי את מחאתו ותחושותיו בנושאים פוליטיים וחברתיים עדכניים.

"עורב התנחל בראשי" כותב רובין בהקדמה לספר המיוחד במינו שיצא בהוצאת עקד התל-אביבית בשנת 1976 וכולל 27 רישומים מדהימים שאחד מהם מוצג פה לפניכם - "יצור מרתק, כפייתי, מותנה, נטול ברירה, יצר קיום בראשיתי - ראשוני - אל המוות. החיים עצמם כמוסר בלעדי - האל, אידיאליסט נלאה." וממשיך רובין: "עורב נוטל חלק - אהבה, מין, דת, מלחמה, שנאה, זעקה, אב, אם, בן, און, כאב, עורב מעכל סמלים, תובע תגובה."

Avigdor Stematsky by Yona Fischer
אביגדור סטמצקי - יונה פישר
Even the most distinctive manifestations of abstraction in Avigdor Stematsky (1908-1989) oeuvre retain an affinity to nature. Stematsky always went out into nature and looked at nature. His abstract painting is totally suffused with the hues of the sunset, the flavor of the approaching autumn and the light of the summer.
Stematsky learned and taught all his life. He went on learning after he
completed his studies at
Bezalel and
he was teaching even before the end of his schooling. He learned from teachers
whom he came upon for brief periods of time and he taught in free frameworks
like the lessons in the "Studio" he shared with the painter
Yehezkel Streichman. He learned from books of reproductions that he
acquired, as did all the painters in those days. But "to tell the truth" as he
wrote to his wife and daughter "I love the changing seasons of the year, even
though they are sometimes accompanied by a silent melancholy, and especially in
autumn and winter but they also have an elegiac beauty".

הספר שלפנינו שיצא לאור ב-1993 ערב פתיחת התערוכה הרטרוספקטיבית של
אביגדור סטמצקי במוזיאון תל אביב לאמנות לא נועד לשמש כקטלוג לתערוכה אף שהיצירות המודפסות בו מהוות את רוב רובה. מטרתו
העיקרית כפי שכתב העורך
יונה פישר בהקדמה היא "להציג הצגה חזותית של מבחר מקיף
וממצה מתוך מכלול יצירתו של סטמצקי - למן האקווארלים שעשה בתום לימודיו בבית הספר
לאמנות בצלאל בירושלים ועד לטמפרות שצייר בשנותיו האחרונות, שרק מעט מהן זכו
להיחשף."
היצירות של סטמצקי מוצגות במתכונת כרונולוגית כאשר שבעת פרקי הספר מהווים מעין הצעה
לחלוקה לפי תקופות לאורכו של מסלול עבודתו של האמן, ששיחזורו מערים לא מעט מכשולים.
בעיית התיארוך היא הבולטת שבהם: כמו אמנים ישראלים אחרים בזמנו, מיעט סטמצקי לתארך
את ציוריו עם עשייתם. לפיכך, רבים מהם נותרו ללא תאריך, ואחרים נושאים תאריך שנרשם
במאוחר (לרוב לפני הצגתם בתערוכה) וללא הקפדה יתרה.
