Mordechai Levanon - Pencil Drawing - View of Jerusalem

The painter Mordechai Levanon (1901-1968) immigrated to Israel in 1921. In 1926, Levanon joined the first "Labor" art studio which was opened in Tel-Aviv under the directorship of the artist Yitzhak Frenkel. Of this period, Levanon records that during the day he worked as a building plasterer and in the evenings he would study with a group of young painters, some of whom were later among Israel's most venerable artists.
His colleagues from that period said that the Bible was never out of his hand and that he was considered by his fellow painters to be a mystic and non-communicative person - his spoken language, like his painting, was a language of his own. In his free time he always had a sketch pad and a pencil in his hand - his urge to draw was so strong that he would sketch anything that caught his eye: sand hills, bushes, trees and objects. The way he converted the physical landscapes into his image of them as an artist, was unique, and provoked, even then, considerable discussion among his colleagues.

מרדכי לבנון (1901-1968) הוא צייר מוערך ופורץ דרך בקאנון של הציירים הארצישראליים - צייר שהפך על פיהם, תרתי משמע, את המושגים הבסיסיים של ציור נוף ישראלי. לבנון עלה לארץ ישראל בשנת 1921 מטרנסילבניה שבהונגריה, התיישב בת"א, אחר כך עבר לירושלים בה חי בבדידות ובצניעות בשכונת שמעון הצדיק עם משפחתו. שתי הערים, ירושלים ומאוחר יותר צפת שבה פתח בשנת 1963 סטודיו, מככבות ברוב ציורי הנוף שלו.
את שורשי הגישה היחודית של לבנון הצייר לנופי הערים הללו מוצאים האנשים שהכירו אותו אישית ואף כתבו על יצירתו (בולט ביניהם דוד גלעדי) בחינוך היהודי-דתי שקיבל מאביו, ובעניין שפיתח בסיפורי התנ"ך ובספרות הקבלה והמסתורין היהודית - הצבע, האור, האבסטרקטיזציה המסוימת של פרטי הנוף והחתירה "האנכית" כלפי מעלה. ואכן, דומה שהרישום שלפנינו מתאים לתיאור הכולל הזה של מפעל חייו האמנותי של לבנון. זהו ציור נוף - "נוף ירושלמי כפרי" בשיפולי שכונת שמעון הצדיק שבה התגורר. העצים שבקדמת הרישום מקנים לו חיות ודינמיקה לא צפויה, על גבול הדרמטי - הפרספקטיבה ומבט העומק בונים ענין ומתח בציר המשלים.
רישומי העפרון של לבנון מתחילת שנות ה-40 סימנו את הנתיב החדש שעליו עלה הצייר בעקבות מפגשו הראשון עם נופי ירושלים ובו החל מגבש את שפתו שבשלב זה התבססה עדיין על מבנה פרספקטיבי "צרפתי" - נקודת המגוז, הבתים הקטנים שבאופק, הם הקדקוד של משולש ששוקיו הם צמד העצים שבקדמת הציור. הקו של לבנון מתפייט באקספרסיביות של וואן-גוך וסוטין עם ירושלים ה"כפרית" שקסמה קסם "דרום-צרפתי" לנפשו של האמן מרדכי לבנון .

In 1940 Levanon went into a voluntary solitude, moved to Jerusalem with his wife Rachel and settled in a very modest residence in the Shimon Hatzadik district where he remained until 1948. His black and white landscape studies and drawings from that period convey much of the lone artist's power and magnetism - most of them were lost in the blaze of the War of Independence fighting when the family had to flee from their house, leaving behind a large portion of Levanon's work.
In those rare copies which remained, one can see that Levanon's distinctive and enchanted landscape is on the way.
