Antonio Gaudi - An Architecture of Anticipation by Juan Perucho & Leopoldo Pomes

The works of the ingenious Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926) created a fantastic new order in the void and served as a precursor for the surrealism and its kindred art movements of our time. Gaudi undoubtedly deserves to be considered as one of forerunners of the sensitivity of our time, operating on the disquieting frontier between structure, plasticity and color.
But Gaudi cannot be seen only as a kind of a sophisticated follower of the "Facteur Cheval" strangely and ingeniously imaginative - Gaudi is, first and foremost, one of the greatest creators in modern architecture and this is principally due to the fecundity and daring efficacy of his technical solutions and the perfect adaptation of structure to function.

The prodigious display of forms as that achieved by Antonio Gaudi in the course of his intense and passionate career, drew from the world a judgment which, though just in considering him as an artist endowed with singular plastic expressiveness, was nevertheless mistaken in disregarding him as a genius of architecture. The critics dwelt on the visionary character of his architecture, as if it was the only fruit of his extreme sensitivity, but went on to point out a certain excess in this sensitivity, something which clashed with the established order of values and which only in our own days would be progressively considered as a rare anticipation of the contemporary taste.
This judgment said nothing about the singularity of Gaudi in the architectural aspect or the exceptional validity of his technical conceptions for the future, and this silence is undoubtedly due to the radical ignorance of Gaudi's work, a failure which is being corrected by this retrospective monograph. The Catalan writer Juan Perucho and Catalan photographer Leopoldo Pomes created a beautiful and well-produced study featuring a selected biography of the artist as well as expressionist photography of excellent technical fidelity, primarily close-up views of masonry, brick and tile work in the works of Antonio Gaudi - a must have for anyone who is interested in architecture and art.

הארכיטקט הקטלוני אנטוניו גאודי 1926-1852 Antonio Gaudi יצר בניינים לא שגרתיים בסגנון פנטסטי, משופע דוגמאות סבוכות ומורכבות של קונכיות, עלים ושורשי צמחים. בנייניו שנראים כשאובים מסיפורי אגדה ומאופיינים בפיסוליות פלסטית, במשחקי אור וצל ובצבעוניות מדהימה, שמשו מקור השראה לאמנות המודרנית בת זמננו. את משטחי הקירות, אולי בשל היותו נצר למשפחת יצרני אריחים וקרמיקאים, שיבץ באבני פסיפס, זכוכית ואריחי קרמיקה כדוגמת בניין קאזה מילה Casa Mila שאחד מצריחיו מוצג בתמונה שלפנינו:
לא רבים יודעים שגאודי היה גם ארכיטקט פורץ דרך ברמה ההנדסית ולא רק בתעוזת העיצוב. גאודי בדק וחקר אפשרויות טכניות של שימוש בקונסטרוקציות ובצורות חדשות, לכל גג שבנה חיפש גישה ופתרון ייחודיים לבעיית הניקוז (איזור ברצלונה שופע גשמים) וניסה לשלב טכניקות בנייה ושימוש בחומרים מקומיים שקרובים לאתר וגם בזאת הקדים את זמנו. האלבום היפיפה שלפנינו מתאר כיצד יצר גאודי את קווי המתווה ואת תכניות השלד של עבודותיו.
