Marcel Janco (1895-1984) is known in the history of the 20'th century as one of the principal co-inventors and co-founders of the Dada movement (1916-1919). "Dada" is a code name for a rather elusive lump of ideas, emotions and sentiments, most of which are of the 'negative' type, going against conventional forms and order in politics, society, art and culture. By in its very nature this movement was short-lived and the individuals that were associated with it dispersed and went their own ways. Still, in its very energetic and anarchistic style, it left a real impact on the cultural life of the 20'th century and one can relate to it several lines of thought and ideas which came into existence much later.

Janco's work "fish dish" dates 1937 - long after his Dada period, when he was already a well-established artist, well acquainted with an impressive variety of materials, techniques and approaches, an art theorist and an important architect whose major works in this field transformed Bucharest, the Romanian Capitol and Janco's birthplace into a modern city. Nevertheless, we find here a truly tantalizing combination of the free spirit, jeunesse, and cheekiness of the Dada with a deep understanding of the basic ideas of art and a master's knowledge of the already well-established ideas of cubism.

יליד בוקרשט, התחיל לצייר כבר בגיל צעיר, מילא את מחברות בית הספר ברישומים צפופים
והחליט להקדיש עצמו לאמנות למורת רוחו של אביו הסוחר הטרוד. בתחילת שנות העשרים של
המאה שעברה נטל מרסל ינקו חלק בייסודה של אחת מתנועות המפתח באמנות המודרנית -
תנועת דאדא. חלקו של ינקו בתנועה זו היה רב-צדדי ומרכזי: צייר, פסל, ארכיטקט, שחקן,
יזם ומטיף שהפך עם הזמן לתיאורטיקן ועורך גילויי הדעת של התנועה. באחד מגילויי דעת
אלה, סיכם ינקו בקצרה את קווי היסוד של תנועת הדאדא, מנקודת ראותו
הקונסטרוקטיבית:
1. האמנות המופשטת היא אמנות האחווה.
2. כדי למצוא את הדרך המחזירה אל החיים,
על האמן להיות אומן ומומחה במלאכתו.

ואכן מרסל ינקו היה צייר אומן ומומחה במלאכתו שינק ממקורות הקוביזם האסתטי ואנין האבחנה של האסכולה הפאריזאית וגיבש את דרכו העצמאית כאמן בשל. ציוריו משנות ה-30 מקרינים קלילות קומפוזיציה ומבטאים למיטב את התכונות הצורניות שבאמנותו, את גמישותו, ואת שמחת החיים וחיוניות היצירה שבה היה נתון בתקופה ההיא. צלחת הדגים המקפצים המוצגת לפניכם היא דוגמא מובחרת לציור שמן נדיר של מרסל ינקו מהתקופה הרוגעת וחסרת הדאגה של אירופה שבין שתי המלחמות רגע לפני הסערה. טבע-דומם פוסט-קוביסטי משורטט ומתוכנן בקפידה, רוויי בדיחות הדעת. זנבות הדגים מחייכים אל ראשיהם ומישורי הצבע בונים את יפיה של הפרספקטיבה התוך-צלחתית.
The painting has many fish in it. You can see eyes, tails, heads, and scales everywhere. Some are more explicit and some are half hinted upon. In the tradition of cubism Janco decomposes the body of the fish into various planes, seen from various angles. However, the result is not static but, to the contrary, very dynamic and dramatic. He creates in this way the thing that is most difficult for a two dimensional static picture to convey: the movement of the fish, its swimming which is his essence. It reminds me of a film I saw several years ago about marine life. It showed a swarm consisting of thousands of fish which move together as a huge well-coordinated large body through the water, never standing still. The narrator explained that this grouping together is actually an effective defense method against potential predators. The enemy is baffled by the large number and continuous vibrating motion and cannot concentrate its attack. The target vanishes by multiplying itself. When looking at Janco's painting I enjoy the thought that I am seeing "fish" (one? many?) through a predator's eye and I almost feel the frustration of watching his concrete meal turning into an abstract idea by means of an endless, never ceasing orchestrated motion.
