Modern Primitives: Naive Painting from the Late Seventeenth Century until the Present Day - Oto Bihalji-Merin

***

From the intriguing paintings of Henri Rousseau, greatest of modern primitives, to the refreshing originality of Grandma Moses and the wonderful simplicity of hundreds of unknowns, picture after picture delights the eye and charms the imagination. The treatment of fanciful and picturesque themes is engagingly matter-of-fact, the colors unbelievably rich. Splendidly illustrated, Modern Primitives is a comprehensive history and critical survey of the naive art of modern time.

The picture "Deer Counting" on the front cover of the book is a work by the famous Croatian naive painter Ivan Generalic (1914 - 1992) who was a farmer by occupation and depicted many peasant scenes.

In his text, the author Oto Bihalji-Merin discusses the precursors of the modern primitives in ancient art, and relates their accomplishments to the art of primitive people and children. In a separate chapter he explores the development and decline of folk art, and the portrait painting of the limners, the forerunners of naive artist in the United States.

The motifs and subject-matter of naive art are discussed under four main themes: landscape and urban painting, portraits and self-portraits, religion and the fantastic and Eros among the primitives. An analysis of the mutual influences of naive painting and the art of the twentieth century as well as biographies, illustrated by portraits, of the artists discussed complete the book.

Ranging over the entire world with 204 color plates and many black and white illustrations, it reveals the unique contribution that untrained painters have made to art.
