Rudolf Hausner and Anton Lehmden
The roots of the Fantastic Realism art movement (Phantastischer Realismus), an affiliate branch of the Magic Realism and of the Surrealism, were established in 1946 by a group of young Austrian surrealists who founded the Art-Club association in order "to fight for the autonomy of modern art and modern artists". The Art-Club, which included a few dozen of painters, sculptors and writers, served as a progressive platform for sharing ideas, organizing joint exhibitions and gaining critics coverage and publicity. A few years later, in 1959, some of the core members of the Art-Club co-founded the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism (Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus) - the official list of founders includes the painters Arik Brauer, Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hutter, Fritz Janschka, Edgar Jene and Anton Lehmden and their legendary mentor and teacher Albert Paris Gutersloh.
The Fantastic Realism gained increasing acceptance by the end of the second half of the 20th century and is considered now to be one of the more interesting post-WW2 Western art movements. Its themes are characterized by subtle compositions of fantastic, imaginary creatures and human forms, often elongated or exaggerated and positioned in imaginative and complex poses, unsettling and strange certain erotic tendencies - all painted in a realistic fashion with great technical perfection in the tradition of the great early Dutch and Flemish masters.
Besides the members of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, other important representatives of the movement are the German painters and graphic artists Hans Bellmer, Horst Janssen and Paul Wunderlich.

Anton Lehmden Die Graphik by Walter Koschatzky - Original Signed and Dated Etchings
Anton Lehmden was born on 1929 in Slovakia where he and his family experienced
the horrors of the last years of the the second world war. In 1945, at the age of 16, the family
moved to Vienna where he started studying in the
Academy of Fine Arts under the
instruction of
Robin Christian Andersen and Albert Paris
Gutersloh. It was in the Professor Gutersloh's
master-class that the friends (Brauer,
Lehmden,
Fuchs,
Hausner,
Hutter,
Janschka and
Jene) who were to form
the Fantastic Realism movement first came
together.
Anton Lehmden important monograph Die Graphik by
Walter
Koschatzky, an art historian and the director of the renowned graphic
collection of the
Museum of
Albertina in Vienna, was published in 1970 and serves as the official
catalogue raisonne of the Lehmden's graphic oeuvre. It contains a retrospective
presentation of Lehmden's works from 1948 until 1970 with numerous colored and
black and white high quality reproduction plates.

אנטון להמדן Anton Lehmden הוא מן הצנועים והמוכשרים שבין חברי הקבוצה המכוננת של מייסדי זרם הריאלזם הפנטסטי. אמן רב אשכולות - צייר ורשם בעל יכולות טכניות מופלאות שההדפסים שלו יוצאי דופן בשקט העצמתי ורב המשמעות שקורן מהם. מבין כל האמנים האיזוטריים שחבורה, בראואר, פוקס, הוטר, ז'נה וינשקה, בחר להמדן בדרך היותר נחבאת אל הכלים והפחות חושפנית, הקדיש עצמו לעבודתו המקצועית כפרופסור באקדמיה לאמנויות של וינה, התמיד בהתפתחותו האמנותית השקדנית, ויצר ציורי נוף מיוחדים במינם שעוד נשוב ונדבר בהם.
דוגמא מאפיינת ליסודיות ויכולת ההתמדה של להמדן היא פרשת קניית טירת דויטשקרויץ Deutschkreutz שהיתה ידועה גם בשמה העברי צלם Zellem ,כאחת משבע הקהילות היהודיות האורתודוקסיות במחוז בורגנלנד שבאוסטריה. ב- 1966, בהיותו בשיא הצלחתו, רכש להמדן את הטירה העתיקה והמתפוררת שהוקמה בתקופת הרנסאנס בסוף המאה ה-14 והיתה במצב חרב ומוזנח. להמדן פרש מחיי העיר הפעלתנים של וינה והקדיש עצמו למבצע רב-שנתי (הנמשך עד היום) של שיקום ושיחזור של המבנה המדהים - פנינה ארכיטקטונית הבנוייה משורת קשתות כפולה מסביב לחצר פנימית ומוקפת בפארק ענק עם נוף קסום. דלת אחר דלת, חלון אחר חלון, חדר אחר חדר, קשתות מבנה רעועות, חיפויי גגות שדלפו, בסבלנות אין קץ ובתהליך איטי, "עקב בצד אגודל" הצליח להחזיר עטרה לישנה והרי היא לפניכם. כל מי שעבר אי פעם שיפוץ בביתו, ולו רק הפשוט ביותר, יודע כמה זה קשה.

Anton Lehmden signature on the first original etching - Landscape - Landschaft - 1970
It seems that the starting point of this landscape drawing is a lyrical moment in which Lehmden captures the solid structure of the earth and the beautiful topographical features of the outdoor nature environment. But then something happens - pieces of the landscape fell away and the earth bursts open. Holes and tunnels are revealed, leading the observer's mind and attention to the scars of the traumatic encounter between mankind and the ground. Suddenly you understand that the "idyllic" landscape view is momentary - a mass eruption caught by the artist a minute before it falls into the depth for good - a frozen second on the time axis from the past into the hostile future.
Anton Lehmden said "landscape is the greatest". His legendary mentor Albert Paris Gutersloh agreed and said "wherever you see Lehmden you see landscape".

Rudolf Hausner by Wieland Schmied
Rudolf
Hausner (1914 - 1995) is one of the most brilliant representatives of
the Austrian Fantastic Realism group of painters and a great draughtsman and
print maker.
Hausner started his studies in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the age of
17 and in 1938, when Austria became part of Nazi Germany, Hausner's paintings,
as the works of many other talented painters of this era, were confiscated by
the Nazi party and Hausner was branded as a "degenerated
artist" - a fact which did not dismiss him from serving as a soldier in the
German army until the end of World War II.
In 1945, after the war, Hausner returned to Vienna and immersed himself in studying the unconscious and its impact on art as expressed in the works of the great surrealist painters, especially of Max Ernst. The horrors of war which were still fresh in the memories of the Viennese citizens as well as the destruction, the barricades, the checkpoints of the occupation zones and the shortages which constituted a though apocalyptic atmosphere were probably important factors in pushing Hausner's potent imaginary into a fantastic course above reality.
Hausner's masterpiece, The Ark of Odysseus - Die Arche des Odysseus
Hausner's masterpiece, The Ark of Odysseus, (in the picture above) was completed in 1956 after six years of work. The painting can be roughly divided into 2 parts. On the left side we see the hero as a young man in a sailor's cap - this is a self-portrait of Hausner which was a precursor to the series of Adam paintings in which Hausner painted during the 60s and 70s based on his own features. The right side is, to my opinion, the more interesting part of the picture which is presented below - I invite you to have a look at a zoom view - feel free to write me what you felt when seeing it.

Schmied - the renowned Austrian art historian and art critic who wrote
several comprehensive artist monographs such as those on

Hundertwasser. The book contains a descriptive list with figures of
Hausner's works of the years of 1936-1970, a detailed bibliography and list of
exhibitions as well as very high quality reproductions of the artist's amazing
works.

האוזנר ניחן בחוש כיוון פנימי שלאורו הלך ושאיפשר לו לחדור אל עולמם הבלתי מודע של
מטופליו - במקרה של האוזנר היה זה בעיקר מטופל אחד - הוא עצמו. ואכן האוזנר מרחיק
לכת בחשיפת חמרים מן הלא מודע של עצמו ו"העלתם" אל המודעות כלומר אל פני הציור
הריאליסטי. סדרת העבודות שבמרכזה (או בכל מקום אחר) הדמות "אדם" Adam - המשוקפת על
ידי דיוקנו העצמי של האוזנר, הן התיעוד של התהליך הפסיכואנליטי שנמשך עשרות שנים
ומהווה את החלק הארי של יצירתו.
