Antique Victorian Balloon Back Chair - Rosewood and Stuff-Over Seat

By the mid of the 19th century, England was ushering in the Victorian Era (1837-1901) and chair design rested to a large extent on the tree beliefs of rosewood, balloon back and stuff-over seat. Patently, in the various trends of the latter part of the century towards furniture reproduction, old styles of former centuries were to express themselves. However, what really interest the real furniture collector are the true genuine and typical products of Victorian England - the most important of which is the Balloon Back Chair which became the symbol of the Victorian era with its dark mahogany look and its stuff-over seat.
Antique Victorian Balloon Back Chair - Carved Rosewood and Stuff-Over Seat
Rosewood and the balloon back employed in the genuine chair in front of you, were two common features of English Victorian dining chairs which were also positioned in the halls and livingrooms of the Victorian upper class houses. Arms are absent because the woman's skirt was becoming extremely voluminous - seated on a relatively lightweight chair with a generously upholstered seat she could relax in comfort and display to advantage her fine dress.

הטרנספורמציה שעברו רעיונותיו של הפלווייט בדרך אל כיסאות ה-Balloon Back שכיכבו בחדרי האירוח הויקטוריאנים היא מרתקת. מבנה גב הכיסא סוגנן, הצורה האליפטית של משענת הגב התפתחה למבנה בצורת בלון צר מתניים שסיפק תמיכה נאה לכתפיים וקלילות אסתטית. המושב המרופד הורחב והרגליים הקדמיות של הכיסא, שבתחילה היו בעלות צורה גלילית ישרה ומחודדת, קיבלו צורה מעוקלת עגלגלה ורכה דמויית S המסתיימת באלמנט 'כף רגל' Cabriole אפנתי.

This delicate Victorian Balloon back chair displays typical beautiful floral carving on the crest and middle rails of the back. The frame is in the robust and solid rosewood; the seat is in the characteristic 'stuff-over' style and the legs are in the fashionable cabriole form of the 19th century - beautiful.
