In order to support our argument ("anything can become a collector's item") we choose to discuss the following three classical bestsellers:

The Bible - on one hand it is the bestseller of all times (though you can always get a free copy) and on the other hand a rare copy/edition is the heart's desire of many devoted book collectors.

Mao Zedong - the little red book, containing quotations collected from speeches and publications of chairman Mao, the legendary leader of the people's republic of China. This book won the title "the most printed book" in the twentieth century (the estimated number of copies is between five to six and a half billion). Nevertheless, one hesitates to call it a bestseller because it was forced, without much choice, on the Chinese people, and during the period known as the "cultural revolution", Chinese citizens walking in the street and caught without a copy of this book, were at risk of being beaten up by the "red guards". Amazingly enough, after the end of the cultural revolution, and the change in the political mood brought about by the new regime, causing the book to loose its status, its original copies (some editions in particular) became a superb collector's item.

Euclid's Elements - not many people will come up with this item as an example of a bestseller, but the facts speak for themselves. This masterwork, written by Euclid of Alexandria (circa 300BC), summarizing in thirteen volumes the most important achievements of the ancient Greeks in mathematics and geometry, is considered to be the most successful and influential textbook ever written. The number of printed editions (the first one dates from 1482, not long after the invention of Guttenberg's printing press) is well over a thousand (second only to the bible). I admit that I never read Mao Zedong
and even today I don't find a great urge in me to do so. But the bible and Euclid
- this is a different matter. The stories of the bible hypnotized me from an early
age, and they immediately associate in my mind with
Gustave Dore's
illustrations. My first copy of the bible had these wonderful illustrations and
I always felt that the bible was the first art book I held in my hands. It may sound
strange to you, but I also regard Euclid's book as an art book. Why? Geometry is
at the heart of all works of art. Just think of the fantastic geometrical patterns
that you find in oriental rugs, the geometrical designs that are behind the renaissance
paintings, sculptures and architecture,

works, the blue prints used by master carpenters for manufacturing the folding mechanism

This amazing collectible art monograph is an exhaustive study of the works of the French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) written by the Belgian poet, author and art critic Max Loreau. Dubuffet reacted against the conventional ideas of beauty in art and in life - he eschewed the traditional standards in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making.
He also explored the possibilities of materials and surfaces in works that depict commonplace subjects and used dust, leaves, ferns, threads, sugar, salt, tapioca, semolina, parts of vegetables and even butterfly wings as essential ingredients in his paintings. In sculpture, Duchamp pioneered two of the main innovations of the 20th century
kinetic art and "ready-made" art which consisted of everyday objects, such as a
urinal and a bottle rack. After his short creative period, Duchamp was content
to let others develop the themes he had originated and devoted himself to Chess.
His pervasive influence was crucial to the development of surrealism, Dada, and
Pop art.

Antoni Tapies - Spanish & Catalan Artists - Great Art Monographs
The Catalan artist Antoni Tapies (born in Barcelona 1923) was essentially a self-taught autodidact painter who took only a few art classes and chose a quite iconoclastic course in his artistic oeuvre. Tapies developed a recognizable personal style related to Art Informel and to Arte Povera - an art movement that focused on the materials of art making. The approach resulted in textural richness, but its more important aim was the exploration of the transformative qualities of matter. Miro's trip to Paris in 1920 developed his trend of Surrealism although he always maintained his independent qualities with respect to groups and ideologies. Gaudi - An Architecture of Anticipation by Juan Perucho
Antoni Gaudi was not an outstanding student, but he was good enough to obtain a solid education of elementary architectural knowledge. In general, his grades were not splendid except for an "excellent" he gained in the course (project) of "Trial drawings and design of buildings or their parts". The project was intended to be the design of an entry gate of a cemetery. Gaudi drew a hearse and some sad characters to create the adequate scene and atmosphere but did not refer to the gate itself. After submitting this drawing, he failed for not having drawn the gate but received the highest score for the brilliant drawing - the examiner that saw the drawing said that he had before him either an insane man or a genius and indeed, these descriptors accompanied Gaudi throughout his life. אוונגרדיסטית שיצאה לאור בתל-אביב 1964. ב-1973 פרסם ויזלטיר את הפואמה "אקולוגיה"
אותה הקדיש לידידו נחום כהן. כהן ששהה בתקופה ההיא באנגליה, הכין סדרה של ציורים

Avigdor Arikha was one of Samuel Beckett's long-standing friends, a drinking companion and a close artistic collaborator. Arikah illustrated Beckett's work, its characters, its atmosphere, its anxiety and the "vision of the void" which was expressed in Beckett's texts. The artist's book L'issue consists of fragments excerpted from Beckett's Le Depeupleur illustrated by Arikha's striking engravings absorbed with apocalyptic volcanic unrest. The copy presented here is number 29 of an edition limited to 154 numbered copies with each engraving signed by Avigdor Arikha.

Yosl Bergner - Collectible Art Albums
"I met Yosl Bergner for the first time in 1957. I was in a habit of coming to Tel Aviv every Tuesday, to do the rounds of the galleries. One day in the Katz Gallery I saw a little oil painting with the signature of Yosl Bergner. There were in it two kitchen utensils, simple and broken, and immediately I felt something extraordinary, something strange and exciting. I bought the picture, but, unsatisfied with that, I asked how I could find the painter. The picture made a deep impression on me and I wanted to meet the man who had painted it." At that time Yosl was already living in Tel Aviv. The man in working clothes who opened the door to me spoke a broken Hebrew, and my Yiddish was not very fluent. But since then I did not miss a meeting with the painter every Tuesday, and my private collection of his pictures grew."
This is how the late Gershon Bineth, a great art collector and an important gallery owner described his first encounter with Yosl Bergner art. In 1969, Gershon Bineth published this wonderful retrospective art album which covers the work of Yosl Bergner in the years 1963-68.

the University of Bonn and serving in the German army,
Max Ernst
(1891-1976) began experimenting with collage:
"One day (in 1919), whereas I looked at an illustrated book of objects
(umbrellas, watches, tools, clothing, etc) I was surprised to see such different
things tight beside the others, things which one does not see together usually,
my eyes saw other objects, I wanted to add with the pencil some lines and
hatchings between the various objects so that it gives the same images that I

Friedensreich Hundertwasser: Collectible Art Books

Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) a Swiss-born painter, printmaker and draughtsman of German nationality, was originally associated with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, and subsequently taught at the Bauhaus, the widely influential German art school of the interwar period. Klee's diverse body of work cannot, however, be categorized according to any single artistic movement or school. His paintings, which are at times fantastic, childlike, or otherwise witty, served as an inspiration to the New York School, as well as to many other artists of the 20th century.

Ben Nicholson: drawings, paintings and reliefs, 1911-1968 - Introduction by John Russell
This collectible wonderful monograph on the English painter and sculptor Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) provides both a full biography of Nicholson (supervised by the artist) and also a stimulating discussion of his works between 1911 and 1968. Though it gives an account of Nicholson entire career, I was especially fascinated with the white reliefs he made between 1934 and 1939. I felt that the white "anonymous" reliefs and the geometrical paintings of that period in his work are the peak of his clean abstraction approach that made him the forefront of the European avant-garde movement.

The Sculptor Marino Marini - Great Collectible Monographs
Marino Marini (1901 - 1980) was born in Tuscany and became Italy's greatest contemporary sculptor as well as one of its most distinguished artists. Marini, like Moore and Manzu was preoccupied with certain themes: Marini's perpetual challenge is the horse and the rider and he has never tired in his pursuit of the endless variations on this theme and his two other subjects (idee fixes in his language), the dancer and the nude. These are the figures which lend themselves to his absorption with the strong expressive gesture captured in a formally disciplined and solidly constructed work of art.
