Art Periodicals, Documents & Books
My grandfather used to make his own spirits at
home from various fruits he bought on the markets. There was a joke in the family
that there is no fruit on earth nor even on the trees of the Garden of Eden that
grandpa cannot turn into booze. His winery/brewery operated on the back balcony,
in a very orderly and tidy fashion, so no one, especially grandma, had any legal
reasons for complaining. He was also very careful about his papers. He never through
away any single paper that fell into his hands. He used to pile them in boxes, using
methods of classification and aggregation he devised by himself and were never understandable
by others. While alive, grandma tried to fight this habit of his, since she was
rightly afraid that all their free living space will be taken up by this strange
habit of his. Alas poor soul! He outlived her, and after she died there was no one
there to restrain him - no one ever dared criticizing him.
In fact, my grandfather almost outlived his first generation offspring. He reached
a really old age. I do feel that there is some connection between all the different
facts which I shared with you above: making your own booze, keeping any odd paper
that comes in your way, and this last fact of reaching an old age. But I will not
claim that I know the formula or even that one exists. I just know that he was happy
with what he was doing.
We, the grandchildren, were not so happy. We could have imagined what was waiting
us in his house on which we took full responsibility. We decided to meet there and
start cleaning and putting order to the place. Of course, these were code words
for throwing away grandpa's rubbish.
However, once we were there, the mood had changed.
No one had the heart to throw away these packed carton boxes, marked and annotated
in grandpa's cryptic handwriting. We looked at each other miserably, and almost
without saying anything, there formed a quiet understanding between us that we'll
take the stuff and store it.
So grandpa's papers lay deep in the basement for many years. It was very comfortable
to forget all about it, but, not very long ago, while reorganizing things, we came
across those old boxes. I decided, out of a moment's burst of curiosity mixed with
longings to the elders of my family, to open one of them and explore its contents.

Like a stream of devils escaping Pandora's Box, there came old letters, bills, classic books and old school textbooks, poetry magazines and art periodicals, newspapers excerpts, art exhibitions pamphlets, art auction catalogs, old ads, prospects, manifestos, visiting cards, marriage invitations, funeral announcements, letter drafts, will drafts, passports, certificates, protocols of assemblies, Haggadahs for the Passover, maps and little pieces of paper with "how to arrive" notes, receipts for tax payments and donations, and many extremely detailed personal diaries. Did I forget something? Probably yes.
What could I do? I tried to sort it out as best I can.
You'll find here some of the things which might arouse your interest and curiosity and perhaps will invoke your reminiscences.
You will also find here various documents, books and art magazines from our family as well as from my own personal archives. Learning from my grandpa's experience I have decided to reduce the amount of work and worry I am going to leave to my grandchildren :-)

What is the role of an art magazine? If the role of the art magazine is obviously and intrinsically tied to the role of art, then what is the role of art in modern society? in any society?
Nice questions - no simple answers. I just want to quote a testimonial sent by one of the readers of an art magazine I like:

The Third Eye - Premiere Issue of the "Strip" Magazine
The Israeli art group The 3d Eye was a tantalizing small bunch of artists and pseudo-artists which was active in Tel-Aviv from the late 60s until the beginning of the 70s. The group, lead by Jacques Katmor and Ann Tochmeyer tried to shock the stagnated Israeli society by initiating provocative exhibitions, art events and publications, sometimes involving blunt sexual content.

החברה הישראלית הקשוחה והקשיחה של תחילת שנות ה-70 לא קיבלה באהבה את חברי קבוצת האמנות התל-אביבית "העין השלישית" The Third Eye שהטיפו לאהבה חופשית ולשחרור מונחה סמים. ז'אק קתמור האמן האנרכיסט, היה הגורו, וסביבו נאספו חברים ומעריצים, חלקם אמנים מוכשרים וחלקם כאלה שרצו להיות - מי שביקר בדירת הקומונה בדיזנגוף ידע שתמיד ימצא שם מה לעשן ובמה לצייר. ב-1972 הוציאה הקבוצה מגזין מחתרתי בשם "סטריפ" שעמוד השער האחורי שלו מוצג כאן לפניכם. אתם מוזמנים לדפדף.

The Israeli art magazine Gazith - Art & Literary Journal by Gabriel Talphir
Rare collection: out of print issues of the first Israeli art journal - Gazith Art & Literary Journal by Gabriel Talphir - first published in 1932.
At the 50th anniversary of the Gazith magazine, the mayor of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Shlomo Lahat, said that he could not imagine the artistic and cultural activity in the city without the Gazith art journal and without the dedicated work of Gabriel Talphir.
גזית - ירחון לאמנות וספרות - העורכים: גבריאל ומרים טלפיר
גבריאל טלפיר, נולד בסטאניסלאבוב, גליציה, אוקראינה, ב-1901. בנערותו הצטרף לתנועת הנוער הציונית "החלוץ" ועלה לארץ בשנת 1925 לאחר שהשלים השכלתו בוינה ועסק בהוראה. בשנותיו הראשונות בארץ היה פועל ועסק בעבודות שונות. החל משנת 1932 התמסר לעבודתו הספרותית והביקורתית וייסד את כתב העת לאמנות גזית שהיה במשך שנים ארוכות כתב העת העברי היחיד שהיה מוקדש לאמנות הפלסטית ומהווה כיום אוצר אמיתי לחוקרי הציור והפיסול הישראלי בתקופת ההתיישבות היהודית בארץ וראשית ימי מדינת ישראל.

כתבי עת לשירה, ירחוני ספרות וספרי שירה של סופרים ומשוררים ישראלים
חוקרי ספרות ממקמים את תחילת העידן המודרני בשירה העברית בעשור האחרון של המאה ה-19, עם פרסומיהם הראשונים של ביאליק וטשרניחובסקי. הם נטשו את העקרונות הסגנוניים הנוקשים שנהגו עד זמנם, ובצד שירתם הלאומית כתבו גם שירים אישיים שבמרכזם האני השר, ועניינם העולם הפרטי האינטימי, נופי ילדות, אהבה וכדומה. בשנות העשרים והשלושים של המאה העשרים עבר מרכז הכובד של השירה העברית החדשה מן הגולה לארץ ישראל. ביאליק וטשרניחובסקי עלו ארצה והתיישבו בתל-אביב. תוך זמן לא רב קמו להם ממשיכים, שהעניין בהם היום שולי, מתנגדים - שלונסקי, לאה גולדברג ושאר אנשי חבורת "כתובים"- ודחויים - אורי צבי גרינברג הלא הוא אצ"ג, דוד פוגל, נח שטרן ומעט יותר צעיר מהם אבות ישורון - שרק הדורות שבאו אחריהם הכירו בגדולתם וייחודם הסגנוני. תופעה מרתקת שליוותה את התבססות המפעל הציוני בארץ ישראל היא התפתחותה של שירת נשים בעברית - רחל המשוררת, אסתר ראב, יוכבד בת מרים, יוכבד בת מרים ולאה גולדברג. בסוף שנות השלושים החליף נתן אלתרמן את ביאליק בתפקיד "המשורר הלאומי". הלא הוא נתן אלתרמן. והתפתח הסגנון האקספרסיוניסטי (בעיקר אורי צבי גרינברג ודוד פוגל). בשנות החמישים, שנים אחדות ממלחמת העצמאות וקום המדינה, כבר קם דור חדש בשירה העברית שכלל את נתן זך, דוד אבידן, יהודה עמיחי, דליה רביקוביץ' וישראל פנקס. הם נקראו דור המדינה והפרסונות היותר מוחצנות שבקרבם (זך ואבידן) "מרדו" כנגד שלונסקי ואלתרמן. בעקבותיהם, בראשית שנות הששים, הופיעו מאיר ויזלטיר, יונה וולך ויאיר הורוביץ. ברשימת כתבי העת שלנו תמצאו מבחר גליונות של שני כתבי העת המרכזיים, "עכשיו" ו"סימן קריאה" שליוו את דור המדינה (בעיקר "עכשיו") ואת ממשיכיו (בעיקר "סימן קריאה").

Concepts + Information: Israel Museum 1971 - Exhibition Catalog
The exhibition Concepts + Information was the first attempt of the Israel Museum to demonstrate concepts which were adopted among a number of young Israeli artists at the early 70s. It encompassed what was included within the term Conceptual Art at that time, from Ecology and Environment (represented by the works of Yitzhak Danziger and Avital Geva), through actual conceptual attitudes (Benni Efrat, Joshua Neustein, Moshe Gershuni) to Information (Michael Druks, Yohanan Zarai).
The catalogue is presented in the form of a collection of documents. The artists were requested to present their works from the conceptual and technical aspects. The photographs attempt to actualize the nature of the works.

הפעולה המושגית מתרחשת באתר העשיה, והמוזיאון אינו מתיימר לשמש לו תחליף, אלא
להדריך אליו את הצופה.

The 76/77 season was a founding period in the history of the Israeli art auction houses - Israel was flooded with the art auction house craze much the same as it is dumped today with Web art auctions and on-line art catalogs. You are invited to have a look at our collections of art auction catalogs which best document the art scene in Israel. Most of the catalogs are in a very good condition and include detailed price lists of the paintings, sculptures, antiques and all other art items which attracted the Israeli collectors of the late 70s 80s and 90s of the twentieth century - you won't find it on the Web.

ההגדה של פסח היא הספר האהוב עלי מבין ספרי הקודש. ראשית, סיפורים מדהימים שעוסקים לא רק בניסים שקרו לעם ישראל ביציאת מצרים אלא גם בנפלאות שקרו לאלו שהיו מסובין בבני ברק והיו מספרים ביציאת מצרים. שנית, קריאת ההגדה היא האות המבשר את בוא המטעמים הנפלאים של ארוחת חג הפסח ואת השמחה שבמפגש עם קרובים ואהובים, ושלישית - הציורים. נראה שמרבית הרבנים הקלו בגזירה הנובעת מכך שביהדות יש איסור חמור על עשיית פסל ותמונה, והרשו הדפסתן של הגדות פסח כשרות שיש בהן דמויות ואפיזודות מן הסיפור המקראי שסביב יציאת מצרים, ובלבד שהציירים עצמם לא יהיו מבני עמנו, וכך כל שנה, יש לי הזדמנות פז לראות פעם נוספת את מיטב התחריטים וההדפסים של גדולי הציירים והאמנים שהגדות הפסח שלנו משתבחות בהם.

"Suiboku Painting - The Unique Genre of Oriental Art" is one of the interesting articles about traditional Japanese art which were published in the copy of the Japan magazine whose front cover is displayed above. Japan, a unique profusely illustrated quarterly journal, was initiated and sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 60s and 70s. The copies of this high quality magazine were distributed to key opinion leaders in the Western world in an effort to improve the public image of Japan after WW2.

Rare and Out of Print Classic Books in English from my Uncle's Shelf
The foundations of my uncle large English library were laid during his service in the British army in the second world war. Being close to the army administration has facilitated him the process of ordering books directly from the best London bookstores of that time.
In the years after the war he never tired of telling us stories about these parcels. How he was waiting longingly for their arrival, and how he gained a few quiet, solitary hours, in which he was temporarily relieved of all of his duties, and could hide himself in a remote corner with a new book. My uncle loved books.

Old and Rare Classic Books in German from my Auntie's Shelf
What is a Classic Book? According to Wikipedia it is "a book accepted as being exemplary or noteworthy, either through an imprimatur such as being listed in any of the Western canons or through a reader's own personal opinion".
I personally think that my auntie's books are a
motivating example for a proper definition of "Classic Books" - have a look at
her book selves.
